Adelbert
Alright, so maybe I left something out, but hey, I've only got 10 options. My vote goes for Grunge, with punk close behind, no doubt about it.
Slaiv
I am a child of the 90s. Gen-X rock. Here's also from another post: I hate pretty much all music. Rather, all POPULAR music. Just because I don't like to go the way of the bandwagon. Actually, now that I think of it, I like alot of music, too.... Classical: Modern classical, classic classical, Russian, German, etc.... Just not baroque. Punk: None of the retarded, new, wannabe-punk bands [like Good Charlotte] - I go with the old stuff. Dropkick Murphys [a few good songs], The Ernies, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Kennedys, Rancid, etc.... Rock: AC/DC, Van Halen. Classic rock is overrated. The Ramones. Alternative: Mostly alt. rock. Powerman 5000, The Offspring, Chrome Locust, Dogpiss, Primus [freaking amazing], Alice in Chains, Liquid Tension Experiment, the Vines, Gram Rabbit, Orgy... Ska: The Aquabats, the Soulutions... Metal: Early Metallica [Disposable Heroes, etc.], Unsane, the Scorpions... Motorhead is the king. Techno: European and Hard Trance, all the way. DJ Kristoff, DJ Tiesto, PVD, Antinomie... Also - alternative techno; bands like the Secret Machines, Orbital, The Prodigy, The Crystal Method, Juno Reactor, the Propellerheads, etc... UK: MUSE, Dogpiss.... Best Band of All Time: Rage Against The Machine. No match anywhere.Second Best Band of All Time: Rammstein.
Fishystick
Yeye, grunge and punk for all! Or if anyone's not up for neither of those(right), go something else! It's going to be fun to see a million votes go to techno and pop, but grunge is the way to go, dudes and no-dudes! Wait wait, Rammstein? Are you being serious, cause if you are, I'm going to sleep now and I'm not coming back untill I wake up again. And ain't The Ramones punk, man? I'm not sure, but I haven't heard many actual rock bands play through 60 songs in like an hour.. then again, I'm in my shell of music in which only a few bands enter and I'm proud of it. Abramul
Best Band: The Clash One thing punk seems to suffer from, IMO, is that the lead vocalists sound like they have a mouth full of oatmeal. Dead Kennedys and The Clash seem to stand out in this respect. Of course, nearly ALL death/thrash metal has a similar problem, but that's more a matter of screaming. Adelbert
Dude, punk suffers from alot of things. I'm listening to Loco Live and I'm telling you.. these guys loose half the text in their songs, but who cares? The Ramones rock, even if all live songs are like one minute long. Peregrine
Classic rock, with classical a close second, and all others in a massive tie for last place. Since around 1980, the world has suffered a complete loss of musical talent and taste. I would have to look long and hard to find even ten songs since then that are worth listening to. And Led Zeppelin >>>>>> all. This is not a debateable question.
Mojlnir
No blues or jazz I see. Nor swing or big band. I agree with Peregrine that the last 20 years has been the equivalent of a giant sucking sound produced by the incredible lack of talent. This lack of talent cannot be made up for either by screaming loudly, being sneaky with synthesizers, or playing really really fast. There are several bright spots though. My first exception is Metallica. I love all their stuff except St. Anger, which I don't hate but have yet to understand. My second exception to this rule is Apocalyptica. Heavy cello. Check it out and be amazed. I can't seem to resist good techno either, though it has to be European in origin...the Ami crap is terrible. Last, but certain not least, the master...Tom Petty. -M
ThetaOrionis01
While IMO punk was the best thing that could have happened to music at the end of the seventies - those dinosaur rock bands were due for extinction, and not a moment too soon - it comes second to Goth for me ... a genre sadly left out of this poll. :tongue2: And I do not agree about a lack of talent in the last 20 years (but then again, you like Metallica, which explains a lot  ) - it all depends on what you like. There are good new bands springing up all the time... you just have to to find them and listen to them.
draighox
Nirvana. In my opinion, the best rock band ever. Now there are Slipknot (see my avatar). A few years ago they only screamed and played little decent songs. Only Joey (drummer, see my avatar again) was superb. But their last two albums show that they became more mature. The screaming remained (though receded a bit), but beneath this screaming is brilliant music. I will also mention The White Stripes, Evanescence (although it is drawing close to pop, dance, whatever) and maybe Red Hot Chili Peppers, but their rapping disturbs me. Yesterday I tried Him and thus far I think he it quite good. So, I'm all for rock and metal. Oh, and Sting. Not rock (as far as I know), but he's really good too. Malchik
There is no question - Classical. But the genre in itself is hard to define. What was 'pop' music in past centuries has become classical. Current film scores, even Pink Floyd, are found in the Classical catalogue. It won't be long before that's where we'll look for Simon and Garfunkel (their first album is 50 years old). You talk of 'best', a very subjective judgement. 'Most listened to by a specific age group' would probably be a more objective way of looking at it. 'Best' often requires the benefit of a rather longer hindsight as opinions change with age(unless you are a goth  ). Still, I have voted.
