Geez, the amount people's opinions differ never ceases to amaze me. :tongue2:

It had the storyline, the physics, the graphics, the enjoyable gameplay. Sorry, but when it comes down to it when I play an FPS I enjoy bits flying about realistically, explosions, decent weaponry and nice effects. If I want to think a lot about strategy and such when playing a game I'll go for an RPG. :tongue2: I've never played UT properly so I can't really say much about it. All I did was play a UT 2004 demo (I think that was it). I've seen it in action and thought it looked bland and mediocre... dingy graphics, boring weapons, generally... just not impressive IMO.

Anyway, this is all straying from the subject ^^;

Although all of Halos rabid fans say is it great is really isnt. To this day I wholeheartedly belive Bungie and Microsoft have built a mindcontrol machine and are taking the minds of people everywhere........

God forbid someone might offer a differing opinion to yours. Clearly that makes us all wrong.

As a basic 'I can't really be bothered to go into immense detail' way of saying why I like halo, here's a nice list.

  • Distinct enemies with their own strengths and weaknesses, no inhumanely over powered boss battles (can you hear me Bungie? Boss battles in an FPS SUCK).
  • Varied weapons, also distinct in their use and operation. Each one is really quite different from the next (Hello? Bungie? Can you still hear me?)
  • The bouncy vehicle physics. Lifelike, not a chance. Entertaining, hell yeh.
  • "Get up so I can kill you again!"
  • As FPS plots go, it's shallow, clichéd but enjoyable.
  • The music - great stuff.
  • For it's time, the AI is really quite sharp.
  • The shield bar!

Ground breaking? No. But I'll be dammed if I will rest on my laurels whilst Halo is bad mouthed with no resistance.

Painkiller boss fights for the w1n!!!shift+11111oneoneoneeleven

Seriously, I loved those boss fights in Painkiller -- they were roughly 60 times larger than you were.

I'll state an agreement with Bullet; Halo was not ground-breaking, but it was definately playable. I completed it and played it online (PC version...LAGGGGG) for well over 100 hours.

I never said it was a bad game, just a massively overrated one. None of those things you have listed are at all unique, unless you're one of those unfortunate xbox owners. If it had been released as PC only, it would've been played for a while, then joined the huge pile of other decent FPSs. But instead, they released it for the xbox, finally giving the people who wasted their money on one a somewhat decent game to play. That's where all the popularity comes from, not because Halo is anything exceptional.

No, just the regular kind of Xbox owner. I wouldn't consider my self 'unfortunate' for owning one, though I suppose if I hadn't been more prudent and bought one last year on the cheap I might think otherwise.

Fair point. But surely the fact I still enjoy it despite having suitably top notch PC releases sitting on my desk would contradict with the 'Halo is only popular because everything else they play is rubbish?' point of view? Surely if that were true I would have binned my copy of Halo months ago?

I love Halo and would have to say its my second most favourite game out there the first one was great and the second is even better. How can you say its not good when millions of fans went wild about it coming out!

It was a good game in all however.... The multipalyer died becase of "bad desine"(cant spell...lol). the text over takes the screen if you have 3 or more on the same tv. Its not based on skill like the first one, but how fast you get the rocket, sourd, shoty, and sniper. If a team has those they win. also peaple say that xboxlive is a blessing, but it is a cuse. now peaple are discureged form lan partys becase why look at a small screen whale you can have a BIG ONE! But thatsjest me...I still like H2 but the 1st wasbeeter becase it was "fun toplay togethe"(in the same house.)

Why they saw the need to cram so much information in screen is really beyond me, and playing slayer on my standard sized TV with a 4 way split screen is virtually impossible, as you said. A real case of "could you put that in the memo and entitle it 'poo I already know'?"

Granted, the rocket launcher was just as powerful in the first game, probably even more so in the over the top infantry killer role. But it didn't have a lock on feature, something I've yet to decide as to whether it's a blessing or a curse.
