Windows 7/8/8.1 - Vortex will not start up

Users on Windows 7/8/8.1 will receive the following error on start-up.

The procedure entry point DiscardVirtualMemory could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNAL32.dll

As of version 1.8, Vortex is no longer compatible with older versions of Windows. We recommend updating to Windows 10 or 11 where possible, but for users who cannot do that the steps below will allow them to continue modding on the last version of the app which supports their version of Windows.

  1. Download the Vortex 1.7.8 installer. (Custom location version here).
  2. Temporarily disable the internet connection to your PC - Important: Failing to do this will cause Vortex to auto-update to the latest version.
  3. Install Vortex 1.7.8 over the top of the current version.
  4. Start Vortex, ignoring any warnings about downgrading.
  5. Open "Settings -> Vortex -> Update" and select "No automatic update".
  6. Restore the internet connection to your PC and restart Vortex.

Please note we cannot provide support for users on an outdated version of Vortex. If you encounter an issue it may have already been addressed in the latest release.

Thanks for the workaround, Mike. And for your activity on Nexusmods.

I'm very disappointed to find that Vortex has decided that Windows 7 is obsolete. The only thing that hasn't worked for quite a long time is Vortex. Now it seems to have blown up nearly everything connected to Fallout 4. :(

OTOH It must be time to go computer shopping. :)

Microsoft stopped supporting win 7 more than 3 years ago. It IS obsolete.... No reason to stop using it though. :) Only reason I upgraded was the new hardware wasn't compatible with 7. I went right to 10. Windows 8 was terrible. If I wanted a tablet operating system, I would have bought a tablet. :D

vortex didnt decide anything. its a mod manager. YOU on the other hand, decided to never update your OS and this is what happens, when you stick to software thats been announced by Microsoft as obsolete and unsupported.

In fairness we didn't have any say in the decision to depreciate support of Windows 7/8/8.1 - the framework Vortex is built on (Electron) dropped support for it in their latest version. We need to keep Electron updated to take advantage of the latest security fixes to ensure we keep our users safe.

I just saw an update in Vortex so I installed it. Next thing, is a pop-up telling me that this version is not compatible with Windows 8. But I'm on Windows 10!
I selected "ignore", the installation continued and everything seems good. Version is 1.8.5.
Retry button brings me here.
The pop-up:

Did you upgrade from Windows 8 to 10?

The only reason this message would appear is because something in your system looks like it's Windows 7/8/8.1.
