Dragons???

I don't think dragons ever literally existed. But I can believe that once there were larger lizards than what we have today, maybe a few surviving species of dinosaur-like creature. Crocodiles and kimodo dragons still survive today, nothing like the mythological ones mind you. But it goes to show that not all dinosaur-like life was obliterated. It does seem odd how this giant lizard creature appears in so many different cultures' myths.

 

I think the whole breathing fire thing was a tad bit of poetic license. :P

Easily. Both cultures created a mythology that involved a giant monster. The first creators of it looked at a lizard and used it as inspiration for their monster.

 

Besides, the two dragons are not the same. Look at chinese dragons vs. european ones, they aren't the same thing like you'd expect if they were literal truth.

Flying lizards that breath fire. Slim to none.

 

Yes but who ever said there was one type of dragon. Look at primates for example there are many types.

I recon the "myth" of dragons came from people back in the day discovering dinosoar skellatins and making a natural leap of logic...

 

think about it

1. dragons lived in caves (nice dry place for preserving bones)

2. dragons look like a big lizzard (hell untill recently thats exactly what we thought dinosoars were acording to there bones)

3. dragons have wings (with the new theory of dinosoars evolving into birds and there [in some casses] stunted forlegs [looking a bit useless for moving on by themselves and probably positiond at death folded next to the body so as to apear avien])

4. dragons breath fire (how else do forest fires start? blame the thing no one has seen befor)

 

now I will admit this is mostly a weastern conception of dragons and the eastern ones are compleatly diferent but there are equily plausable explinations for these as well

 

and is so far as that yeah dragons did exist :)

Altough there is no proof of this, it is still possible that dragons or animals on which the dragon-myths base acctually exist or existed.

 

Are you aware of the principle of living fossils? The most famous example is of course Coelacanth which was thought to be extinct since the end of the Cretaceous until it was found at the beginning of the 20th century.

 

So it is possible that some Dinosaurs survived until today in remote locations. Perhaps not until today, but there could have been some around some thousand years ago and so the myth around dragons evolved.

 

Also the fire-breathing-thing is possible. You need an animal which has stored highly combustible gases in its body. When attacked, this animal will breath those chemicals out and they will begin to burn as soon as they come in contact with air.

 

So, perhaps there was a living fossil somewhere which used such a defensive mechanism and this is how the myth around dragons formed. And if we are lucky, this species has survived until today. Who knows...

 

Of course, there is no proof for this, I am only speculating.
