Oh really? Where in the rules does it state that you aren't allowed to post unpopular opinions? I see rules about not flaming or disrespecting forum members, but last time I checked, the pope didn't have an account here.

Tada. Someone didn't read very closely did they. That's what you did, not just post an unpopular opinion, you posted it in an obnoxious way that was just asking for trouble. You can't tell me you didn't realise that. :P

 

As for tact, it's a worthless thing. Ever here of a style over substance fallacy? The way an opinion is presented is completely irrelevant. I would be just as offended by a statement whether or not it's said in nice polite terms. Tact is just an excuse for people to be offensive and get away with it, and I refuse to waste time with it.

 

And that's just an excuse for not bothering about other people's feelings and being a complete git. Tact is used so those who don't agree with your opinion will still respect, or at least, accept it. If you don't bother with tact people are just going to take you for an opinionated jerk. At least, when it comes to things such as this. :P

 

And by that standard of offensiveness, you should ban yourself as well. I find the way you trivialize the deaths of everyone else who died yesterday (by caring only about the pope) extremely offensive. And I'm also offended by the hypocrisy of being lectured on respect by people who would laugh at the misfortune of others just as much, if it was a different person.

 

So which is it, Switch? Do you have principles, or just a problem with me?

 

What are you on, exactly? :P I don't care only about the pope, I never even said that. You're putting words into my mouth. I don't know about everyone who died yesterday, otherwise I would care. And I'm not sure I'd ever really laugh over someone dying. Seems kinda sick to me :P

When will you guys learn that the best way to stop people from causing trouble is to IGNORE them. But I'm not sure why anyone cares about Peregrine's humour. Even Catholic believers accept the disintegration of the body as part of death, it doesn't matter because the spiritual goes to reside with god. The worst that can be said was that it was in poor taste from that point of view. However I think there is a fine line between gentle mockery and deliberate insult. I'm just as likely to say something similar but only to those who I believe will take it as my gallows humour and laugh. To post it on a forum such as this is inevitably going to cause problems AND you know it Peregrine! Don't hide behind mealy-mouthed excuses. And by doing it the way you did you have made it hard to hold a debate on a serious and important world issue. So I will try to get it back on keel.

 

What will happen? They will elect a new pope who may or may not be less reactionary. We'd better wait and see the way they jump before we decide how the world will react. They have the chance to move a little further into the twentieth century (I think the twenty-first will take a bit longer.) It can only be to the good. A lot of religion is based on laws and conditions that were very relevant and important at the time religions were founded but have since changed. A slavish adherence to the past not only renders the religion out of date it can actively damage lives. The difficulty is working out which bits need to be changed and how to make this change acceptable to believers. (Look at the furore over Vatican 2 when it was introduced). I hope the new pope will grasp the nettle. Let us see.

pope JP2 was revered as the spiritual head of the Catholic faith worldwide - an estimated 1 billion people, that's roughtly 1/6th of the population of the planet - by extrapolation of the 52,000 members of this site, you're probably risking offending 8,000 people to a greater or lesser extent.

 

I am astounded that any individual, yet alone a moderator who should act as a mature example to other forum members would behave in such an obnoxious manner.

But do you really think that you dont sound like you are either 1. saying that praying does not have an effect or any good which violates the millions of times that has been said in the bible or

 

2. you are trying to say that I am praying for evil people in the world to continue there wrath which is pure childness because you obviously know..."know" that quoting on a broad sentance such as that "I pray for everybody in need of help" which I will modify! I do pray for the evil people of the world to get better yes its true and you can "quote" on it all you want you stupid slimebag!

I have thought of this myself and I have come to beleave that, less and less people are being faithfull let alone going to church, this may not seem like much not but as these people have kids they teach this lack worshiping to them and the faith gets weaker and weaker with every generation. As for myself, I don't beleave in god.

You should know perfectly well by now what my opinion of the bible is. When prayer is proven to work, which it hasn't been, I will stop saying "if it works".

No, you missed the point entirely. I'm not saying you're intentionally looking to cause harm, just that if you pray for everyone (and prayer works), you aren't thinking carefully enough about the consequences of your actions.

 

And the question here was the physical health of someone, so by saying "I pray for everyone", you imply that it's for their body not their soul/mind. Therefore you're helping to extend the lives of people who would use that restored health to cause more harm.

Do you really think that was "crushing into the dirt"? I made one minor joke that wouldn't even have attracted a second thought if he'd still been alive. If I truly hated him enough (instead of being merely apathetic) to crush him into the dirt, I would've posted a long rant on all his flaws, celebrating his suffering and death. But I didn't.
