Dark0ne
Interesting indeed, isn't it? Someone on IMDB.com compared what happens in the movie to what is happening now in the USA: - Certain people believe that the so called democratic and free countries are in fact corrupted and evil; they begin to fight against them (Seperatists - islamic extremists) - The one in power begins a war and feeds his people with fear in order to gain more power over them (Palpatine, Clone War, special powers of the chancellor -Bush, Iraq war and patriot act) - The ones in power utter sentences like "If you are not with me, you are against me" and only think in extreme terms (Anakin - Bush) - The democratic elected leader receives more and more power until he is a dictator (Palpatine - Bush in the future?). To be honest it doesn't really seem anything like that, more like Nazi Germany..lol. I also believe Lucas is Jewish, so..
Darnoc
To be honest it doesn't really seem anything like that, more like Nazi Germany..lol. I also believe Lucas is Jewish, so.. There are similarities to the Third Reich, yes. And one could argue that the Third Reich was model for Lucas' Galactic Empire. But I believe that the similarities to our today's situation are closer. Hitler didn't use his war in order to gain more power over his people and turn democracy into a dictatorship. He turned democracy into a dictatorship in order to make his war happen. Bush, on the other hand, used the terrorist threat and the Iraq War to gain more power, just like Palpatine did during the Clone Wars. And just like the Galactic Republic, the USA is still a republic, altough the president gets more and more powers, just like the emergency powers of Palpatine. In StarWars the story tells us, how this could end: in dictatorship. If it happens in reality... who knows?
CLB1110
I saw it for the third time today, and it gets better EVERY TIME :D . I have to say I enjoyed it much more than any of the others, the origionals included. But damn, Anakin is so ignorant......
Slaiv
...But I believe that the similarities to our today's situation are closer....True, but wasn't the basic plot planned out in the '70s and '80s?

Except that Lucas has publically denied this, and stated that any symbolism is related to ancient roman politics. And even if you want to claim he's lying, the major plot points would've had to be done before any of Bush's "crimes". It's always involved the overthrow of a democracy by a leader taking power through borderline-legal means at first. Any similarities to Bush are pure coincidence. Was the whole Anakin turning to the Dark Side to save Padmé meant to be ironic since Padmé wouldn't have died if he hadn't turned? Was half asleep when I went to see it, so humour me. Of course it was. It's a pretty ancient theme that trying to avoid a prophecy of tragedy will only fulfill it.

It's always involved the overthrow of a democracy by a leader taking power through borderline-legal means at first. Any similarities to Bush are pure coincidence. I didn't know that he publically denied this and I won't say he is lying, for I don't believe this. I am just saying that it could be interpreted that way. And of course it is clear that Lucas wrote the plot a long time ago and any similarities are unintentionally. But they are still similarities, how big a coincidence it may be and people might just interprete it that way, even when Lucas denies this symbolism. I don't believe that I am the only one who sees the parallels to our present situation, you know. It doesn't even need any great imagination, the similarities are almost thrown at your face. To sum up, I believe Lucas didn't mean this to happen and had never any intention to make a political statement to our present situation, but I also believe that there will be people who still will interprete it the way I did and will point out this "symbolism". Of course it was. It's a pretty ancient theme that trying to avoid a prophecy of tragedy will only fulfill it. Two words: Oedipus Tyrannos.
