Metallica and "old-Metal" bore the hell out of me. They do a half hour set down the local Rock club of "old-Metal" and there's nothing there to thrash to. Nu-Metal gets me going (physically, not sexually) a lot more.
Guitar solos bore me to tears.... though it can be midly entertaining to point and laugh at the guys playing air guitar.

That might be because complex music is not for everyone to understand. But of course, there will always be pop with guitars, witch can get you both going (physically, not sexually) a lot more. :P :laugh2:

Complex? Did you just say 'complex'?

There's nothing complex about an extended guitar solo - which is a pity, because in that case it might be less mind-numbingly boring.

No, really. Metallica are about as complex as a 4 piece jigsaw puzzle.

If you want complexity, look at some classical music.

Extended string? Do you mean playing style or guitar type? In either case, the complexity is in:

1) Writing the solo. You can write a catching (simple) melody for vocal and supporting/bass/rythm guitar, but not everyone can write a good guitar solo, because it has to be quite long and can't repeat itself like vocal or supporting/bass/rythm guitar.

2) Playing it. Anyone can play the same chords again and again to support vocal, but playing solo (especially speed solo) is a completely different thing.

And I'm not talking about Metallica, because I have listened to only a few of their early songs, and nowadays they're crap, no offence.

And sure, I'd listen to classical music if I wanted that much complexity and no guitars. No, thank you, I'm quite happy with hard rock and progressive and death metal. :)

Most GOOD guitarists can do solo's off their head. It's really NOT hard. Two of my best friends are amazing guitarists and often just walk in my room, pick up my guitar and play something completely random while we chat.

From experience I can say it's a lot harder to connect with three other instruments (vocals, drums, bass) and keep in time when strumming multiple different chords in seconds than it is to do solo's.

These threads never get over-discussed, do they?

In no particular order, not even alphabetical;

Nirvana

The Ramones

Dia Psalma

Strebers

Black Sabbath

Motörhead

Neil Young

Manfred Mann's Earth Band

Pearl Jam

Soundgarden

Pink Floyd

Led Zeppelin

That's it.

Word about Led rocking, cause they do!

Wow, this guitar solo thing is getting heated, just make sure no one winds up dead...'cause if they do, we won't know where to stash the body

Roight, anyway, as of the moment, i'm listening to:

Could Well Be In - The Streets

Doin' Time - Sublime

Somebody to Love - Jefferson Airplane

Girl - Beck

And everything off of the Out of Exile CD by Audioslave

Yeah!

Hm, I think you encountered a cheap band there...
