A clean way to install Fallout London with Vortex

Hi everyone,

I've been doing a little bit of fiddling since Fallout London was released and I've found a way to install it as a mod in Vortex with a fairly simple command line option. This prevents the default installer from permanently changing your Fallout 4 installation and allows you to quickly switch between FOLON and the base game. All this involves is creating a folder junction in Vortex's staging folder, but there are some caveats to be aware of:

  • This is not the recommended install method by the FOLON team, so use it at your own risk.
  • Vortex's staging folder for Fallout 4 and the GOG download of Fallout London must be on the same drive.
  • This method does not apply the INI/plugins.txt tweaks that come with the game.
  • Deleting the mod entry in Vortex will completely delete the GOG folder for FOLON (you can unlink the folders by manually deleting it from the staging folder)
  • FOLON's installation must me on the same drive as your game and mod staging folder.

Alright so here's how you do it.

  1. Install Fallout 4 and Vortex onto the same HDD (e.g. C:\)
  2. Manage Fallout 4 in Vortex as you normally would.
  3. Download Fallout London from GOG, but do not run the installer.
  4. In Vortex, while Fallout 4 is your active game, go to the "Mods" tab and select "Open -> Open Mod Staging Folder", we'll need this shortly.
  5. Close Vortex once FOLON is downloaded.
  6. Locate the folder where GOG Galaxy installed Fallout London.
  7. Open a command prompt window.
  8. Run the following command where FALLOUTLONDON is the path to the folder Fallout London is installed in and FO4STAGING is the Fallout 4 staging folder (opened in step 4). Be sure to surround path paths with quotation marks.
    mklink /D "FO4STAGING\falloutlondon" "FALLOUTLONDON"
  9. You should see a new junction called "falloutlondon" in your staging folder. You can click on it to ensure it correct directs you to the Fallout London game folder. (This is the folder containing installer.exe)
  10. Open Vortex again and it will tell you a new mod was found in the staging folder, accept these changes.
  11. In the "Mods" tab you will see a new mod called "falloutlondon". Double-click it to open the details sidebar.
  12. Under "Mod Type" in the sidebar, select "Engine Injector". You can also rename the mod and add a version in this panel.
  13. If there are any conflicts with existing mods ensure Fallout London is set to "Load after" them all - unless they are mods for Fallout London itself (in which case they should load after Fallout London to overwrite the files correctly).
  14. Enable the Fallout London mod and deploy your mods
  15. Head to the "Plugins" tab and make sure BakaFramework.esm, LondonWorldspace.esm and LondonWorldspace-DLCBlock.esm are all enabled.
  16. Finally, go to your Fallout4.ini and ensure it has the section below. You must also add this to Fallout4Custom.ini if you have that file present.

You should now be able to swap between Fallout London and Fallout 4 by enabling and disabling the mod in Vortex and then deploying the changes. Remember to start the game with F4SE if you want to play Fallout London!

So I made it to Step 14. Got the link set up and the mod is in Vortex. Set it to load after all other mods. Everything seemed OK. But when I go to Deploy Mods, I get this error. The 548 files are just all the files inside the falloutlondon mod folder.

I had the Fallout London folder from GOG on a separate drive from FO4/Vortex. So I tried moving Fallout London to the same drive, and then it worked.

So, just a note that Fallout London from GOG must also be installed on the same drive as Fallout 4 and Vortex.

Another note: make sure you add the "Archive" section to Fallout4Custom.ini if you also have that file.

For those with trouble making the link you can use this tool to generate the link.

You right click on the directories mentioned above and "set link source". Then go to the deploy folder and right click and select "drop link as (hardlink)"

Thanks a bunch for this, worked for me !!

@Pickysaurus Thank you for the guide.

I had tested it with FoLon V1.01 and I have a question about step 15: The file "BakaFramework.esm" is not listed in Vortex and I can't find it in the FoLon installation directory. Is the file obsolete or should I install the mod later? --> EDIT: I have read elsewhere that Buffout 4 is a (better) alternative to BakaFramework, so probably no longer necessary.

This is awesome - thanks! I had previously installed FOLON directly via the GOG installer, overwriting my Steam downgraded basegame. I have enjoyed it greatly, and got into Sim Settlements 2. However, the questline for Sim Settlements 2 doesn't work in FOLON, and I wanted to way to experience it in the basegame. But that was no longer possible.

So I saved a back up my Fallout 4 install folder (which I never needed), uninstalled it via Steam, then deleted the remaining files leftover from FOLON manually. I also deleted the fallout ini files after backing them up.

I had previously set up two profiles in Vortex,  with separate INI and Save files, but switching did not yet work. I had just disabled my FOLON specific mods in the Default profile.

Next I re-installed FO4 from Steam, ran the FOLON downgrader here: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4london/mods/1?tab=description. Opened Vortex and chose "Reinstall" on the right for all the mods I had from before (in Default profile) - to make sure they were all re-installed properly on the clean Fallout 4 install, even though Vortex showed them as enabled. I verified I could start a new FO4 baseline playthrough with all my mods enabled.

Then I followed the instructions above, and everything worked out flawlessly. In the London Vortex Profile with the save files from my current playthrough, I enabled the new "falloutlondon" mod as above.

I get a message about Buffout 4 not being necessary, as I suspect another copy was installed by FOLON on top of the one I had from before.

When I went back to basegame, the first time it refused to launch with an F4SE popup error until I disabled and re-enabled F4SE there. I did not have to re-do that.

Some of my best and still working mods are all the FallUI mods, LootDetector, and Sim Settlements 2. Looking forward the the SS2 questline in the basegame.

For some reason, when I ran FOLON earlier, it was never detected as modded and I had achievements enabled. After this procedore, both profiles and saves were correctly flagged as [M] modded.

another note, anyone getting pink textures I was able to fix this by using this [Archive] settting in my ini:

I am almost positive there is some extra in there, but it works so I don't really know/care 🤣.

(note it has something to do with the above setting is missing the Textures14 and Textures15 ba2 files in the list)
