Is there a mod to keep settlers form taking guns out of the workshop?

I think you misunderstand. It's a single trunk that I added from the workshop for spare gear that I don't want to carry around all the time. Why would I want an entire basement for that?

If you're referring to the OP, I think they were just looking for a place to store extra gear as well.

I tried all mods (lockable trunks, doors etc.) which allegedly keep settlers from taking stuff out of the workbench but I always had bad luck. The only reliable method for me was placing an inaccessable chest. Beware that settlers can spawn in locked rooms and places, so don't use locks. I build a single scaffold (also nice for turrets) with a chest on it, high enough that you cannot access the chest from all directions. If I want to put in/ take out stuff I enter building menu and fetch a ladder I placed far enough away. No lost items since 4 years.

I understand perfectly.    Just offered an option they might not be aware of.

Sometimes you just want to get away from the sea of settlers and do your work in privacy - and a trunk doesn't do that.

Having to shoo away settlers from workbenches just so you can use them, etc.    Gets annoying at times.

Just go to the basement and craft your "chems" in peace.   😄

If you break the NavMesh, NavCut is the keyword, setterls cant reach your container and thus cannot take any object inside.

The best thing is to use powered doors afaik.

Another option is by using FO4Edit and or the Creation Kit, and flag the workshop as player owned but its not super reliable compared to the Navcut.

Just a side note.   I don't trust a single settler in this game to operate a Minigun (or for that matter a few other weapons in the game - yes you Missile Launcher).

Some "adult toys" you really should keep away from these people.   😑

That said the way I set up my settlement defense is if I wasn't there - suddenly showed up and was naked.

At each key settlement defense point are 3 things:

a)  A pegboard - with the weapons attached I'd use if I had to defend this position (and I'd never use a Minigun - just saying).

b)  An Ammo Box - with the ammo needed to feed it.

c)  A First Aid Kit - with the emergency supplies needed in case this became a prolonged engagement.

If they take that stuff?   Great, got no problem.   They are armed with what I'd want them to be and I can always restock it.

There is also the check mark "Obstacle" details see here: https://falloutck.uesp.net/wiki/Static

Im not an expert but what you could do is to create a Static items, which cuts the navmesh, forcing the NPCs to stay out of certain spaces, such as a house which is only accessible by a door, cut the navmesh and done.

So if you create a static item, which is only visible in the Workshop mode and has no collision use the Obstacle check mark.

And here is a video of how to do it via Creation Kit with collision boxes:
