Mod Browsing Overhaul Discussion

one of my responses as far as I know never got approved like 5 pages back or so. it was me actually praising the new color scheme. as that is quite literally the only aspect I do like. but my reason for liking it is niche and too small a group to be considered in actual feedback. I have an old eye injury that makes me highly photosensitive. the new  colors cause no monitor brightening and thus no pain. however that is largely the only thing in this entire update I have liked. I don't want my pc mod site looking like a tablet. I had to spend 20 minutes refinding everything so I could use it. my normal lighting quick use of the site after a decade of practice and patronship has been cut in half. all in all its a really bad design on multiple fronts. fully quantifying every little thing that makes it bad. would take me hours of analyzing the new design for you. and it would be almost exclusively purely negative.

Simply put folks you gave it a good effort. But you took an L this time. Hold your heads up, go back to the drawing board. You have an infinite amount of chances to nail it. So long as you don't piss off the community enough to just migrate at their first chance. Nexus is a work horse. Its been here forever and is well established. Don't lose that userbase for the sake of ego. Show some humility, and make it right.

Thanks for the feedback - we totally understand that this is a big change and jarring for long term users. When you say "I had to spend 20 minutes refinding everything so I could use it." — what would be the biggest thing that caused issues for you when using the design for the first time? Anything in particular that stood out?

It's something we're looking at, along with potentially other layout types to give more choice.

There is that at least. Would go a long way to alleviate the other extremely questionable design choices. You do realize that the Nexus, as it currently is, is basically a dark-mode copy of Bethesda's mod site right? I shared a pic comparing them both, some pages back. Nearly identical.

I suppose you call it quicksearch now the search that opens the window now. If you search for something and set to sort by date and then search for something else it resets to endorsement. I remember this being addressed by staff earlier.

If I understand you correctly, do you mean your search preferences in settings don't match the search results? If so, we're pushing an update soon to fix that — your sorting preferences will carry through to the quick search and full search results.

Firstly the UI of the mod pages for a start, that keeps getting ignored from you all. the old colors, design and more. it is way too minimalistic.

Change it back to the old UI or at least give people options to customize it to look nearly like the old ones.

Or is my statements that is shared by many going to be just ignored again?

Ah right you're calling the quick search function that new search window that pops up when using the searchbar, I personally honestly don't get beyond that feature its just a smaller search Ui. It would be great having a way being able to toggle the window to not show up. But yes that's what I meant.

BGS is plained by many yet offers people the option to mod their games for free, a powerful trade tbh.

I would not be surprised if BGS would go all in to become a competitor to a mod site like nexus. Maybe this explaines some of the design choices of nexusmods (?), and or the people doing the website are gamers too, modders too, and work for both as freelancers? That would be a win win ...

Again the dark design is not so bad, but people with serious problems seeing certain icons should be taken care of much more. They need the most attention.

I will say it again, and did it when the new UI for the forums was soon to come, make it a dark AND bright/white theme. Like wikis have it. This would solve much in an instant already.

There is also some wikimedia thread about design choices for dark and white themes and what people with visual impairment need to flawless browse.

EDIT: Here a very good article to browse ... https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Accessibility

I understand, if I remember correctly there was a user with visual impairments involved in the discussion who found the higher contrast helpful, which makes balancing different accessibility needs tricky.

Visual impairments vary. Requirements for different impairments can be direct opposite to one another. I have a visual impairment - I sacrificed my eyesight on the altar of cathode ray monitors in the '80s and '90s. High contrast makes my eyes itch, water and bleed in extreme cases. Literally. Too much strain. It makes text appear blurry to the point that I can no longer read it, it makes letters jump around the screen. I have to resort to page recolouring plugins to be able to read your site for longer than a few minutes at a time.

However, people with a different impairment will tell you the opposite - hence the existence of high contrast themes, they actually need that contrast to be able to read text. You will not be able to create the colour scheme that caters to both types of impairments at once. And please don't tell me that I am "healthier" than the other person.

Here's the latest with reducing the contrast on the areas that have been brought to our attention. If you're currently experiencing discomfort, let me know if the below is more comfortable for you. To clarify, this only covers improvements for those that find the contrast too high. It doesn't cover feedback on the layout which we are looking at separately:

Just the sheer amount of wasted space in this picture gives me a headache, the old design was fine and I have been looking through this thread and every dev replies only to certain stuff. Any mention of reverting or people expressing their dislike of the new design is ignored. I want to ask right here what would the devs consider enough evidence of the desire to revert or at least have the option to switch back the previous design. There have been many concerns throughout this thread about the amount of wasted space, the contrast and colour difference among many others including the general dislike of the new design.

I honestly believe than any sort of poll that is widely advertised and posted at the top of every nexus mods site for all game would get a clear response indicating a desire for a return to the old design or a option to switch between the new and old but I do not believe that such a think will happen but yet her I am hoping it does. If it doesn't then even if this is seen as toxic then I say the devs are cowards and any posts saying they care about what the community and userbase thinks are utter lies. When devs ignore their userbase it never ends well for them.

Bring the orange colors back to separate the bland text. Single text color makes it look like one paragraph  column
