Pyro31 Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Hello there I am not new to nexus mods i am new to posting. in light of the new ownership i have decided to started researching and possible open an new free mod site. as someone who studies business and CEOs i can safely guess that the new owners will either try to force modders to charge or up the membership or make in mandator to use the site. or another options is there make it that you have to buy games thru nexus and if not you cant mod your games. form a business stand point these are the most logical choice for and marketing company. and sadly either the dark one sold us out or was lied to. so i am here assuming the new owners don't block delete or ban me and this post. i am asking for anyone modder or mod use who would like to jump on board with me if i have to create a new site for the community. any and all who want to are welcome to come with me. although if the new owners keep nexus way it is and don't chance anything there be know reason to do anything but mod games and play said modded games. but if they do what i believe they will then we should plan the next step now in case. If you read this far and this still up and am not magical band then drop me a line or comment tell me your thoughs 1
showler Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Good luck with that. A lot more work than you think. Also a bit early to panic.

People are getting in a panic because the company is being described as a firm that tries to monetize everything they can. But I'd say it's way too soon to assume that this is the death of everything this community is about. Too much of a change or disruption would just make the brand lose value while people shift to other modding communities and sites. Too many of the usual methods of monetization don't work when you are dealing with content that is fan-made and reliant on resources that are not owned by the modder or the host. I remember that there was similar panic when ads were implemented before a download would start and when premium membership was added to help pay for mounting server costs. I have faith that Robin went with someone who understood the community and the model that made Nexus Mods successful. But we'll know for sure when they replace the moderators with AI.
JimboUK Posted June 17 Posted June 17 I doubt Bethesda would turn a blind eye to a site this size trying to monitise mods for their games. 1 1
Arneercool Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Firm is Danish. There is a whole other culture to take into account. ( General and workplace) I would chill out is what I would do.

Expand That was the impression I got as well. To be honest, I don't think much is gonna change here with the change in leadership. Robyn hand picked his successors, so I can only assume that they subscribe to the same values that Robyn has...... The term "Tempest in a Teapot" comes to mind. 1
PUGSEXY Posted June 17 Posted June 17 (edited) People are acting real stupid right now - like we in the gaming community haven't lived through obvious enshitification before. They are going to take their time and slowly squeeze whatever money they can get out of the site. That's what all these venture-vulture capitalists do. They didn't buy this site to serve the community, they bought it to make money. Like give me a break: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/nexus-mods-new-owners-promise-they-wont-monetise-the-site-to-death-as-users-panic-at-the-whiff-of-venture-capital-the-new-owners-are-here-not-sitting-in-a-distant-tower-remotely-directing-us-all-towards-some-nefarious-goals/ "Nexus Mods' new owners promise they won't monetise the site to death" - yea, but you'll get awfully close to death, cause that's what vultures do. And I don't think it's too early to start preparing for the worse. Get the site going and if you can demo a viable product, I will donate money. There should be several mod sites IMO to ensure no monopolization and enshitification. Edited June 17 by PUGSEXY
JimboUK Posted June 17 Posted June 17 There's little point in worrying about it now, we don't know what they're going to do and even if they do enshitify the site there's nothing we can do about it other than move on.
dieyng Posted June 18 Posted June 18 (edited) I can't say that hearing that the new owners are all about monetizing gaming fills me with any form of confidence. So I think this is definitely worth thinking about. I do think however that if Nexus gets ruined (which I think is definitely possible) there are alternatives, for example a site with a db in its name that might be able to just take on anyone no longer feeling that Nexus is the right place for their mods. IDK, going from every single time something like this has happened... it's really hard to stay optimistic about this. Not that Nexusmods is perfect or ever was, but the nature of the buyers fills me with little hope. Edited June 18 by dieyng
