Low fps, any fixes?

The game is certainly playable, it's just that outdoors it can be kind of choppy and especially in cities when looking in a direction with lots of objects it slows down considerably to a point where if I had to fight I couldn't. Very good inside and in dungeons though. The funny thing is that i feel like I run Crysis better than this game. Crysis would average around 30 fps and was very stable, never crashed very small stutters from time to time. Oblivion can have longer stutters and sometimes a stutter to a crash. Still a fantastic game, just wondering if there's something I can do to make it better.

Hmm, yea I'm using Win7 64 bit, is the 3gb enabler not worth it then?

No, it was a limitation for the 32bits (not even XP in this sense, just a 32bits limitation and what it does is taking from the OS some space reserved to it, not so good a solution though).

By your description (and considering your rig should not have graphics troubles with the game at that resolution)... the issue may be related to sound, more exactly with the 'onboard sound'. Some other threads explained the problem, for now try disabling music and sound in the oblivion.ini file you find in the c:\documents....\oblivion, just for testing purposes.

If the fps gain is 'HUGE', you'll know the culprit, and there is not a known workaround. You should go for a good discrete sound card.

Anyway and meanwhile, try the guidelines from here, mainly the ones allowing Oblivion to use multicore cpus. Some mods may help too, like the "quietfeet", sadly it will not help this specific onboard sound issue yet it can diminsh it in someplaces.

Edit: Not sure about the windows7, but Vista did eliminate the DirectSound 3D Hardware support from Direct X and uses OpenAL now, instead. This affects most directx based games, even some newers like fallout 3. Creative soundcards owners have an application called "Alchemy" to workaround it, others brand owners are unlucky here and will have only software and basic EAX.

Have you installed the latest 64 bit graphics driver for your video card?

Back off some on those maxed out video settings to see if that speeds things up any.

I am running Win7 x64 also, and with an older Nvdia 7600GT board, my FPS increased when I went from Winxp x32. with all of the same hardware.

Check the settings on the streamline, it has a MAX fps setting also. It trades FPS for performance, and if you are setting the Max fps to 20 it will look very good, but will be sluggish.

Turning the sound off didn't make a HUGE difference, but a little bit. Still stuttered a bit, but no crashes which was nice. Changing the streamline setting helped a little as well, smoother in some areas, others it still gets bogged down on. I just recently tried reinstalling my drivers, they should be fine. I'm letting streamline manage everything except actor, item, and object fade as I don't want to be caught off guard, I put those at 75%. Is that reasonable?
