Gas Prices

Gas in New Jersey hit an alltime high of $5.65 a Gallon yesterday. The area in which I live the prices are well above $3.50 a gallon. Are the prices to high because of the Disaster in New Orleans? Or was this bound to happen due to the war in Iraq and Saudi Arabia hording their oil?

Honestly, I believe that these prices are ridiculous. In NJ(afformentioned) people pay more for gas than most people make off of Minimum Wage(roughly $5.15 a hour). How is anyone supposed to honestly make a living with these prices this high? The only ones profiting are the Gas Companies and the Oil Companies(wont even mentionBush and his connections to all of this).

I have way to much I could say about this, so I'll leave it how it is.

Entirely due to New Orleans. The problem isn't lack of oil, it's lack of ability to transport it. The pipelines in that area have been shut down, the port is gone, and the refineries in that area are damaged/destroyed. It's simple supply and demand, supply has suddenly dropped, and demand has increased due to panic about higher gas prices. It's a self-fullfilling prophecy.

That's what happens when you have a hurricane damage the distribution system. The demand is higher for what's left, and prices go up.

I seriously doubt that once you subtract the cost of damage to the pipelines/refineries from these "profits", the gas companies aren't doing nearly as well as you think.

Besides, what do you propose we do about it? Cap gas prices and put the gas companies out of business, so you can have no gas instead of expensive gas? Make it illegal to make too much profit? You don't have a right to cheap gas, get over it.

Change to alcohol based fuels that would not only stop the middle-eastern monopoly on fuel, but also reduce costs and emissions similtaneously. Of course, this'll never happen because the monkey you call your president is in bed with the oil companies.

So? The monkey doesn't control every business in the country. Nothing's stopping someone from selling alternative fuel. The problem is right now it's not competitive with gas. If gas prices go too high, other options will go into widespread use.

It's deemed illegal in the UK since it isn't recognised as a fuel source and not taxed, and all fuel needs to be taxed, so you're not meant to use it unless you're putting it in a registered agricultural vehicle, who receive special benefits. "Red diesel", as it is labelled, is one of them.

I'm sure there's a similar reason for why it isn't in use in the US.

Unleaded regular is about $3.00/gal here. That's about £0.43/liter. The San Francisco Bay area usually has higher gas prices than most places in the US.

How much is it in the UK? Do you blame your leaders for the high prices there?
