A truly rewarding day at work today. I was working on this old Torana. A Torana is a small hatchback similar to a Capri/Escort or maybe a Chevy Nova, it was a tiny little people's car, but was endowed with an enormous V8 engine in order to make it effective as a touring car racer. Legendary Australian racer Peter Brock won some of his most famous victories in them, and they've become an icon, symbolic of the brief golden age of local racing during the 1970s and 80s in Australia. With the combination of a low kerb weight, a powerful, high-revving engine, and good handling, the Torana was a potent racing machine, and one of the few truly world-class cars Australia can claim to have been responsible for.

It was clearly someone's weekend project-to-be, banged up, with a lousy interior, four flats and a dire need of mechanical attention-and that's what it was there for. My job was to get the engine started-this one was a V8, and a genuine V8 too, making it a pretty special thing. It was hard work repairing it-it'd been dying a slow death in a field ore maybe a scrap yard for years, clearly, and the engine was in need of some serious work, new sparkplugs, some new wiring, new fluids, and a few pieces had been scavenged off it and were not yet replaced, but late this afternoon, it coughed, barked, then actually started, and that really felt sweet. For me half the pleasure of a really good car is the sound-it ain't a sports ar if it doesn't sound... unique. There's no one good sound, but you know one when you hear it. That Torana sounded sweet, after 6 hours of working on it with 3 other guys, hearing the old zombie start, and run, albeit brieffly, really was rewarding.

It needs a bucketload of work yet, and I'll be seeing it again to tune it in a bit and help strip the mouldering interior(that's gunna suck) but I don't really find myself minding. Some cars you work on as a mechanic you just want to see gone, they're either boring(Land Cruiser), or ugly(Taurus, Wingle), or simply appliances(Camry, Aurion) but some, you feel just a little bit invested in, you can tell they're either special to someone, or a precious old thing needing preservation.

It'll look something vaguely like this when it's done. Not many sports package Toranas left, they're a pretty rare car, they always were, especially as restorable scrap.
