Had a scary sunday. My entire family are auto junkeys so motorsport is a bit of a gathering event. Last night saw a round of world championship motorbike racing, and two of the most memorable crashed of the year. One was truly hilarious-one rider "low-sided" which means he was leaning the bike over, but leant to far, the bike fell over. THis is the most minor form of bike accident and almost never inflicts any injury. So the lowsider's bike goes skidding down the road, and another rider, Takaaki Nakagami, ALMOST dodges it, but the shape of the hill guides the bike towards him, hits his back wheel, and sends him tumbling into the sand pit in a very comical way. Since he was only doing about 30 KM/H, he was not injured. The other was a really scary freak accident-American veteran Nicki Hayden rode headlong into a long concrete wall, leaving everyone un a bit of a panic, until an hour later the news came in that he hardly even had bruises.

Safety in these sports is just incredible now, ten years ago, Hayden would have been dead, no two ways about it-straight into a concrete wall at 190, you wouldn't survive that. Now they've got Michelin Man airbag suits, HANS devices, kevlar body armour-and the results are amazing. Injuries do happen, but usually only at very high speeds, and in the car sports, the saftey is even higher-the last significant injury in Formula One was in 2008, and that was simply a nasty cut treated with bandages.
