The bike I've bought is a Kawasaki ZX1, given I'm part of a racing club as a hobby, it's a perfect choice-the ZX1 is light, easy to ride, very affordable(costs about the same as Ford Fiesta) and quick as blazes. But it's not the best bike I've ever owned. Not by a million miles. For me, there's only one bike worthy of "greatest ever" and that's the first bike I ever owned, the MIGHTY 1991 Honda Cub. For all it's sleek, sexy fairing, shrieking race-derived engine and phenominal speed, the Ninja ZX1 isn't just a good sports bike, it's a bit of a legend-it's THE go-to bike for almost all trackday riders, there's nothing else this fast that's this cheap. But the Cub...

The Cub may only have a 70cc lawnmower engine, a sprung bicycle seat, pushbike looks, and an allergic reaction to hills, BUT it does have the essence of everything good about a motorbike. The Cub was intended to bring hardy, reliable transport to masses who couldn't afford a car. And by jove it does that well. It's incredibly cheap to make since it lacks any sort of electrical system, but because anything unnecessary has been stripped off, it's as light as a feather and the small but gutsy 70cc engine doesn't struggle unless it's carrying a few hundred pizzas. Handling's... well, really not bad-it's so light that you can easily maneuver it through the tight cities it was made for. Honda sold over TEN MILLION Cubs since the '60s, it's the Mini/Model-T Ford/VW Beetle of bikes. I love them.

Werne-sound was one of the main reasons I chose the ZX, it sounds like an F-1 car at full noise, an ultra-high pitched banshee scream, but my absolute favourite sounding bike would probably be the old Indians, maybe... '60s? I never had the pleasure of seeing one in person since they were never sold in Australia, but I did see a documentry a few years back about a New Zealander called Burt Munroe who raced an Indian at Bonneville in the '60s, and it sounded EPIC. More like a bike V-8 race car engine than a bike. It was called World's Fastest Indian, good flick, if somewhat dramatised. A true story too, Burt Munroe was very much a real man.
