I never actually tried OSX, so I'm really curious on how it feels like.

It feels proprietary and expensive, even more so than Windows. Lots of eye-candy and stuff, it looks like a hybrid between GNOME Shell, Unity and GNOME 2 with Avant Window Navigator and all that running on Compiz, but that's about it. As for the feeling, imagine Ubuntu with more fancy effects and a bottom dock, but so oversimplified that Windows starts to look like a hacker OS, there's so much hand-holding you start to feel like you're that weird kid that eats glue in class.

And that my friend, is OS X Mountain Lion I got to try on a friend's Mac.

Personally, I'd rather spend that 6,000HRK (and I'm not kidding on the price, that's how much it cost, and it's a freakin' desktop with a single 500GB HDD storage drive, Intel HD graphics and a low-end i5) on a gun so I can shoot myself in the face for being dumb enough to even think about buying it.

By the way, does anyone know why that stuff is so expensive? I've built two copies of those (similar specs in similar-sized case) and the total price on hardware comes nearly 500$ less than the price of an equivalent Apple product.

Yeah, I'd never buy any Apple products. I got my iPod touch as an introduction to Mobile OS-es and touch/smart devices. But it's not for me, it's for consumers, not for developers. You can't do anything with it besides use it, and you can't even develop for it without heaving one of those super expensive Mac PC's or laptops.

As to price, there's one word that describes it very well:

Brand.

When you hear Apple, you think expensive, big, meaningful etc. But that's it, you're not paying for hardware or software, you're paying for a name. Attention prostitute hardware basically.

I muuuuuch prefer open source stuff, so my next computer will most likely have Linux and Windows on dual boot (I realize i mentioned Windows and Open Source in the same sentence, I only say that because I game a TON and there's still lots of usefulness in Windows. And I'm just used to it a lot.). I'm just waiting for next year until I get to Uni, I shall unleash the developer in me then.

Huehue, be prepared.

I've never been in an earthquake before. We don't get them here in Australia - too far away from the tectonic plate edges. No, instead we get bushfires, droughts, floods and cyclones.

Earthquakes sound like fun, actually; everything just suddenly starts shaking... well, that would be very fun if stuff didn't break and people didn't die.

If you're interested, I've been in a fairly serious Earthquake. I would describe the sensation as deeply unsettling. It's not terribly frightening or emotionally draining, just... unsettling

The first thing you feel is the ground shifting. The sensation I had was of a series of shockwaves passing through the ground. It's not a shake or a vibration, more of a shockwave running through the ground itself. I can't really describe properly just how powerful the shockwaves feel without resorting to useless hyperbole, but they're the most forceful thing I've ever felt-the world itself seems to shift under your feet when each one passes. There's also the noise: the quake will effect every loose object in the neighbourhood, and that's loud. Strangely enough you usually get a cacophony of wind-chimes and bells and clattering plates. And then in about fifteen seconds or so, it's all back to normal again. And that, oddly, is the most unsettling part. It came out of nowhere, with no warning, and then within under a minute normality once again reigns.

On a related topic, it's widely believed(though not proven) that earthquakes can cause strange glowing phenomena in the sky for a brief moment during the tremor. As I said, it's not proven, but there's a vast amount of images, videos and even historical accounts claiming it to be true. Scientists largely believe the phenomena do exist, but aren't really sure why. The lights are clearly natural in origin-they look a lot like another well-known phenomenon called a circumhorizontal arc, and there's a few very plausible theories as to what causes them. The main one-the one most seismologists think is the likely cause, is Piezoelectricity: the earthquake causes immense friction within Quartz rock, creating a powerful but temporary electromagnetic field(aurora). The other being they really are circumhorizontal arcs, though why they would appear above an earthquake and then vanish again, is yet to be worked out. One way or another, they do certainly seem to exist, and they mainly appear in quartz-rich areas, fuelling the piezoelectricity hypothesis.

It could be a number of things combined with our magnetic field and static electricity from the rock as the electrical field hits the atmosphere.

Sense our magnetic field is so strong it nullifies anything escaping out into space.

I muuuuuch prefer open source stuff......Windows...

AAAHHHH!!! MY EYES!!! IT BURNS!!! IT BUUUUUUURNS!!!

Okay, enough with that.

And I get why you want Windows, games don't run well in Wine and it's a pain in the arse to even use Wine. And why would anyone use it when they can run it natively? Keeping Windows around just wasn't worth it for me, I don't have time for games anymore and games that are coming out lately suck so much I wouldn't even play them if I were to get them for free. The old games I do want to play don't work in Windows on the other hand (by old games, I mean really old games) but they do work in Wine. Since gaming is the only thing I actually used Windows for, I freed myself some HDD space.

By the way, I understand Apple stuff is expensive due to brand and all, but that much? I've seen the components they put inside their desktop machines, I can build a similar (albeit, faster) machine using PC parts, Apple uses mobile components which suck more. For example - i5-3350p, 4GB DDR3-1600 CL9, 2.5" 7200RPM 500GB HDD, mobile optical drive, 120W PSU block, mITX case. Estimated price of parts on Croatian market ~=2800HRK. Price of an equivalent Apple machine ~= 6000HRK. Why would anyone pay over 500$ (3200HRK) just for bragging rights is beyond me.

The effects are definitely electromagnetic, that's what we do know: scientists claim they're always accompanied by distortion consistent with an intense electromagnetic cloud, and according to the geology website I just looked at, apparently they produce a noticeable static electric charge as well. My guess would be something to do with either friction, geology, and the earth's magnetic field. Other than that I don't know. I find virtually any aspect of science fascinating, but geology has always had special appeal. I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but when I went to university, one of the things I seriously considered studying was seismology. I don't regret being an engineer-my career's just beginning and I already make a few K a year more than a tenured geologist does for work I enjoy, but still. I do have interests beyond cars, books and griping.

Have you seen cases for iPhones or iPod touches or iPads?

Let me show you a similar one to the one that I have on my iTouch

The accent is on the Apple logo. They want you to know that it's an Apple product. They want you to show it off, because they know that you want to do that too.

Rolex.

Alienware.

Apple.

Armani.

I bet you heard all of those by now. That means the brand is working, it's renown, and the more renown it has the more it will cost. While you and me cannot fall into that trap, maaaaaaaaany other people can, will and did. And important thing to mention here is that you and me know what goes into Apple products hardware wise, but a ton of people don't. So they buy it because Apple advertises it like it's everything you'll ever need. (See the accent on "PRO"? Simple manipulation.)

I like my products in a nice price/performance balance, and I avoid brands that put their name above everything else.

Google is an example that uses their renown for good. Look at the Nexus devices, cheap as f*** and renown as well. While you can only get a Nexus 7 in Croatia, it's about 1.3k HRK (while say the Huawei Media Pad Lite 7 is 2800 HRK). WIth a quad core processor, 1Gb of ram, and the latest version of Android, it provides a price/performance rating that no other brand can offer you. Of course, Google took out some things to improve the price, like a back camera (added in the new model) and the ability to expand space via MicroSD's. But it's all you really need, as a user, as a developer, or anything else.
