Windows Issues

Recommended Posts

Ok I suppose this technically isn't about hardware... But then there seem to be a lot of topics in here that aren't. Can't really think of anywhere more suitable to put this.

Basically, after having some problems recently with Norton and regeditting/deleting it out of my system, I finally got the net back up on this PC by flushing the DNS. However, now the Windows XP search feature doesn't seem to work, the annoying little dog is there, but his speech bubble is blank and condensed into a thin line at the bottom. Also, when I try to access System Information nothing happens (even when accessing the exe itself), and bringing up System Restore just results in a white window as though it were non-responsive (although it doesn't display as non-responsive).

I've already run a System File Check to make sure none of the main files are corrupted... and yet still problems. I'm not sure if it did the check properly or not, the bar went across after I inserted the Windows CD, then the window disappeared and nothing else happened.

And yes, with the regedit I did make sure to only delete things with Symantec or Norton in the directory under the data string... had some instructions from a friend who's done this half a dozen times before.

Who knows what else has screwed up. If anyone has any advice, it'd be appreciated. ^^;

As per usual. There are much better third-party solutions available.

Try opening up the case.

...Wouldn't System Restore bring you back to when the malware was installed, anyways?

If he were as smart as you suppose he is, would he need to do it any more than once?

Try using a system that implements the majority of POSIX standards correctly (not that the standards themselves matter much; such systems are by and large just better-designed). Beyond that, RRR.

This is why you always want a separate windows partition, for when it inevitably gets corrupted in some annoying way. Backup your data, reformat, reinstall windows. Seriously, if the solution doesn't appear quickly, you'll probably spend more time looking for your solution even if you manage to find one.

Yup, with your system specs reinstalling Windows will take you about 45 minutes. You've probably already spent longer trying to fix this problem already. Reinstall Windows, never touch Norton again and install AVG and ZoneAlarm. Case solved!
