Best mods for a first playthrough?

I'm sorry if this has been asked a gazillion times before (which I'm sure it has :/), but I was just looking for some advice on the best mods to use the first time I play Oblivion. I'm not too bothered about graphical mods, model and texture swaps etc. Just looking for mods that make general improvements that make the game more enjoyable (but not too challenging).

Thanks. :)

Take a look at the top 100 mods, that might help. Everybody has their favourites.

Check out some armors and weapons first, see how you feel in some new 'feathers' . ;)

Then, you can do some quests, why not?

I warmly recommend 'Gates To Aesgaard 1'

That was my first quest mod,and it was really good.If you like horror and you ain't shocked easily, then this is the mod for you.Good for leveling up,as well.

Excellent dungeon crawl and some new places to visit.

If you want some new, interesting story, something for a brain training, then definitely download and play 'Tears Of The Fiend'

This was a great experience to me,this story is extremely well written, and it will drop a big impact on you,if you get into it deep enough.Awesome,overall.

Maybe a new land and more to explore outside of Cyrodiil?

I would recommend Elsweyr, but that mod is currently hidden as I saw, though, before you have a chance to try it,try 'Windfall'

This mod is very well made,it is a new land with a pile of quests to do,and the quests are excellently written, many stuff to do in the land of Windfall.

That would be all for the start, these 3 will keep you busy for a long time.

If you want something a bit heavier and more challenging, maybe ayleid oriented?

Try 'The Ayleid Steps'

This is incredible stuff,I hope you try it one day,it is a must have.

For using that mod you will need OBSE

http://obse.silverlock.org/

That is oblivion script extender, and when you install it,you can download some obse based mods, for example a combat mod, called 'Deadly Reflex'

http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273

In short, with OBSE,you can do amazing stuff which the vanilla game didn't allow you to.You won't regret it.

And you will need COBL

which is a great thing, adds many new items of many types into the game, ingredients, books, clutter, etc.A must have,if you ask me.

Good hunting to you !

I would also recommend the UOP for the first play-through. Sure, it fixes some minor graphical things, but it also fixes some quest-breaking bugs which you don't want to have to deal with.

Unofficial SI mod (if you have Shivering Isles):

And Unofficial Mods Patch (if you have Knights or any other DLCs):

You should play the base game (no mods except the UOP) for a bit so you know what is normal in a game and what the mods change. You don't want 50 mods installed and then come across something that seems strange and not know if it's a screwy mod or if that's just how the game is supposed to work.

I would also recommend a User Interface mod so you don't need to scroll through your inventory and other screens so much. I liked the BTMod when I started and now I am using Darnified UI (since I couldn't get BTMod to work with the Steam version). If you are playing in full-screen mode then either one is fine, but if playing in windowed mode then Darnified might not be the best because of the smaller font (unless you have a huge monitor).

I second the notion of all current patches, Unofficial Oblivion Patch, and Darnified UI.

Keep it simple, find out what you like, what you don't, what you think could use some improvement, then do a search to see if a mod has been made to address that point. Chances are, it has. :)

three ancient mods that I recommend to any player

1 - Blackload -- an early dark UI mod that simply makes many loading screens go black

2 - Guild Storage -- Every budding adventurer needs a secure chest in each and every guild

3 - noload - removes the "loading" message while you are exploring the wilds of Cyrodiil

All by Tandem

None on Tesnexus

Hard to find, but well worth the trouble - found via Google

BTW they were all released within the first 3 months of Oblivion!! -- Like I said, "Ancient"
