MosAnted
Apparently having the entire royal family killed under your watch is bad PR.Not to mention it being the Mythic Dawn... I mean if it had been the Dark Brotherhood I'd have understood... but the MD? So they became sort of a 3rd party spy agency dedicated to eliminating threats to the Empire, but without the legal red tape, and worked extensively throughout the Dominion.I remember that Titus I knew where their true loyalty laid (ie Dragonborn) and he didnt fully trust them which is why he created the Penitus Oculatus. LeddBate
The Blades have been many things. They may have STARTED as Dragon Hunters, but they transitioned into imperial bodyguards and record keepers under Reman. During the Interregnum, they seem to have basically wandered around trying to find another Dragonborn, more for the Dragonfires than anything. And when Septim established the 3rd Empire, they became spies and covert enforcers of the Imperial Agenda. And now, without Dragonfires or Dragonborns being overly important, they're basically lost with no purpose. Even the attempt to return to their Dragon Hunter days won't last long. They're a dead organization. This is why I don't bother bringing recruits to Delphine at the Sky Haven Temple. What's the point? All you do is fill up the temple (and the practice grounds above) with new Blades that do... absolutely nothing. (Unless there's a mod out there that let's you do something with/to them.) Esbern is, frankly, just a crazy old man... Well, at least he's good for a combat buff when you go out to tackle a dragon. Okay, not a really impressive buff, but every little bit helps. Although, admittedly, things can get a bit awkward... Odahviing: (Flies in and lands on the practice grounds above Sky Haven Temple) "Yo, Dovahkinda, whut up?" Delphine and other Blades: (Look daggers at Odahviing.) Me: "I told you to stop calling me 'Dovahkinda'. And, now is not the best time..." Odahviing: "What? Don't you have 'Parth-Dilemma' installed?" Me: "Of course I do! Do I look like an idiot to you?" Odahviing: (Rolls eyes) Me: (Face palm) "Okay, not my brightest response..." Edited for spelling because I really AM an idiot... fraquar
Meh, at least recruiting Blades makes some sense. With a follower mod you could fill up the Blades and actually take them out on adventures to you know like kill dragons (among other things). With the Thieves Guild, you just get more members as you progress but all they do is just hang out in the cistern. I mean it's not like you are going to take 3 other thieves with you on an excursion. You seem to be the only Thieves Guild member that does anything other than shoot at the practice targets.

With the thieves though you do eventually end up in charge and even though you don't see the recruits doing things, someone besides you has to be filling your Guild Leader chest with loot every week or so. As you say they work alone and quietly and you get the profits. What is wrong with that?
fraquar
That's not loot, that's protection money - because I scared the bejeebus out of everyone in Skyrim. Vex told me to go out there and make them "fear" the Thieves Guild and that's exactly what I did. Now they are tripping over themselves to pay whatever tithe is necessary to keep me out of their cities. Apparently, the TG members must fear me too, because there isn't a thief in the place that is missing every time I return - it's like I'm Gunnery Sergeant Hartman or something. Tiffany cufflinks perhaps?

Tiffany cufflinks perhaps? Lol... my runs are always clean though. Not spotted, no lives taken just valuables. And the money keeps rolling in regardless of how much or little I work at that (after being appointed leader) so someone else must be doing something. Even if it is protection money, someone has to be out doing the leg work to collect.
MidbossVyers
Not quite on point, but just something to think about: In Fallout New Vegas, the villains were Caesar's Legion, and the NCR symbol is a bear, correct?

Every Bethesda game has some ubiquitous villains. FO3 it was raiders and the Enclave. In FNV it was Powder Gangers and Caesar's Legion. In Skyrim it's bandits and Thalmor. (Or Legion or Stormcloaks, depending on who you back.) Edited October 15, 2015 by CaptainPatch

The Legion in the Fallout is the opposite of the Empire in the Elder Scrolls series. The NCR symbol is a bear because they are the New California Republic, borrowing the California State Flag as a banner. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_California#California_Lone_Star_Flag

It was introduced by Interplay back in Fallout 2. What Bethesda did in FNV was just a natural progression of such a political entity.
