... And General Tullius isn't Darth Vader neither.

Gaaahhh! The Grammar is killing me! (Hits self with double-negative hammer repeatedly.)

Aheh. My apologies, I just could not resist.

Seriously though, I do not think the Empire is evil. Looking over the threads, I do not see a significant amount of them saying anything like that. In fact I see a lot of threads titled something like "Why I Think the Empire is Right", etc.

Let me ask you: Why do YOU think the Empire is perceived as "bad"?

A grudge against the Emperor manipulating you during the events of Morrowind? That was really the only part in the series where the Empire and its institutions were the antagonist (I don't count Redguard because that's not a "numerized" TES).

Disappointment with the non-Dragonborn Emperor, who has failed to keep the Empire together?

A serious man-crush on Ulfric?

I wouldn't know; I'm an Empire type of guy from Star Wars to Foundation to the Roman Empire.

I wouldn't say the Empire was the antagonist in Morrowind... They did try to manipulate you to better their status inbthe province, but Dagoth Ur was very much the Antagonist, with the Tribunal taking s fond seat for creating him in the first place.

Anyway, there is a deeply interesting ingrained mentality, particularly in the west, that Empires are evil. That's always been an issue with TES, and people have commented since Arena about how it's weird SAVING an Empire.

Plus, they do try to cut your head off in the beginning...

Still, out of the 4 polls I've seen, the majority of people actually support the Empire. The highest split I've seen was only 54/46 mind you.

I'll be honest when I say I really don't see behavior that suggests this is even an Empire anymore. An Empire would have sent an Imperial army into Skyrim and squashed this uprising. Then again, when virtually half of what is even left of the Empire anymore IS Skyrim, that's not really possible.

I mean this isn't like England in the Revolutionary War, where the Empire center was separated by a good size of the globe and vast seas from sending in what was needed to squash things. Empire center is right across the Skyrim border - virtually no logistical issues. Just march an army over and end this thing.

I don't hate the Empire, I just don't really see one any more.

I reference you back to the map we have for Tamriel...

We know Tamriel is experiencing a Cold War right now, and the majority of the Legion is sitting on the Valenwood and Elsweyr border. To move those legions would be like marching from Spain to the Russian border. Without the benefit of trains. That's more area than Napoleon managed to conquer.

You also misunderstand what an Empire is. It's not some overbearing autocratic conqueror bent on control. It's a centralised authority which regulates the interactions of multiple ethnic communities. Empires have solved more disputes through politics and diplomacy than they have through war. The EXPAND through war and conquest, but that's generally been shown to be a bad method of maintaining power.

Romans

English

French

Ottomans

Egyptian

etc

There is NO other way to keep the rest of the Empire in check than periodically from time to time using that military to CRUSH uprisings - to send a clear message to the rest.

Seriously, name 1 Empire that ever existed that wasn't the military power in it's day? This Empire's day is a thing of the past - hence my comments about not being able to squash an uprising right at their BACK DOOR.

What you just described just shows how really weak and vulnerable the "Empire" really is. In essence, they have no reserves - they are all on the front lines.

Umm, how many DAYS travel is it to Cyrodill from Skyrim? Spain to Russia is measured in MONTHS.
