Jer Cantrell
Well im sitting here in my dad's office and i can hear my sister's usher cd and its really starting to wear on me. Of course it would be stupid of me to generalize against rap in general but its true that i have never heard any rap song with any kind of good meaning behind it. I think music is incredibly important in life and it inspires me more than anything else. I think that soon the whole rap phase is going to pass and be remembered as a phase as ridiculous as roller disco. I was wondring if you felt the same way or if maybe im just a nutcase
wesaynothin
I don't think rap will ever go away. It started when, in the 1700's? It has evolved alot since then, but the meaning is tha same. Rap wont be rap, it will probably be more evolved, but it will still be rap. Usher isn't rap!!!! Usher is horrible horrible POP! DIE POP DIE!!!!
Peregrine
I doubt it will ever go away completely... I mean, you'll always find someone to like just about any kind of music. Sadly true, since the world would be far better off without that garbage. Of course just to prove my point the defenders of this "music" will be in here soon I imagine. Darmoth
What qualifies music as being 'good'? The music has to have soul. The artist's heart has to be into what they're singing about. If it isn't then it's just noise.
idea assassin
Well, good is subjective. What I think is good, you may not. Now, having said that, my criteria for good music is: 1.) I have to like it. It has to move somthing in me, or relate to me in some way. There are examples of every genre out there that fit this category. I literally have heard at least one song in every musical category I've ever heard that I liked (including rap). 2.) The artist has to believe in what they are playing/singing/saying. It has to come from inside them. Anyone can stand up and sing a song. But to do it well, with feeling and intensity, is special. 3.) There has to be some talent behind the song. A beautiful song, played well and with feeling, can be the most moving thing in the world to me. I've literally been moved to tears by a beautiful piece of classical music, for example. I know that's pretty simple stuff, but that's my opinion of good music.
Peregrine
Well, good is subjective. What I think is good, you may not. Agreed.... there is no way to clearly define something that is based so much on personal feelings. Well, except for the obvious noise (think of someone's first attempts at playing an instrument). Sure, you can make general statements, but for every person who agrees with it, there's going to be somone who likes something that defies it. I mean, if the stuff's being made/sold/heard, someone's got to like it. Now that that's done with, I don't really have a definite "rule" for what music is good, I just know what I like and don't like. And anything after 1980 = bad in my opinion! ThetaOrionis01
I agree with idea assassin - the way we experience music is a very personal thing, and we all react to music differently. So, there is no absolute good and absolute bad music. Even music which is written according to harmonic principles and performed by technically proficient artists will not appeal to everyone. I, for instance, find Bach clinical and sterile - his music does not involve me at all. And while I can't stand pop, I'm sure there are people out there for whom even some cynically manufactured pop song has a deep meaning. So, instead of calling it good music and bad music it would be more accurate to refer to it as music you like and music you don't like. Personally, I think the 70s were an awful decade, musically speaking, and that punk was the best thing that could have happened, and that there is a lot of good music around now - but I'm sure there will be a lot of people here who'd disagree with me.
Eltiraaz
IMO the eighties sucked big time for music and fashion. :P Music does need to come from your heart, you can't properly preform something if you're not attached to it in someway... (happy that most people agree with that.) I can't stand rap because all its about is sex and money, (albeit there are some decent rap artists, but the genre itself is corrupt, IMO.) I like hip hop when it was in its earlier stages much better. It's more feel good, with addictive rhythym and it just makes me want to get up and dance really... Music is mostly about lyrics to me though. I try to pick apart the lyrical value of a song, and if it has a point or not before I decide to call it AMAZING!!, some of the best lyrics I've heard come from Coldplay, (older) U2, Our Lady Peace and Chili Peppers. I like a good addictive rhythym as well but lyrics are the icing on the cake for me. :D Thats the real reason why I don't like rap, they lyrics consist of: sex, drugs, money, alchohol, violence, gangs.. its so negative and pointless  Pop music I rank among rap for being without a real soul or purpose. Its about making lots of money off the biggest market available and getting really famous. <_< Horse crud... Real music however makes me who I am. :)
Jer Cantrell
What qualifies music as being 'good'? The music has to have soul. The artist's heart has to be into what they're singing about. If it isn't then it's just noise. I agree completely thats why i see "musicians" like eminem and just wonder how they are successful at all. There's so many contradicitng messages in his lyrics and most of them seem to be made soley to angel off the anger of a troubled adolescent who can use the music as a barrier to keep himself safe from the realities of life. You see cliques of people who like a certain music and are listning to it for entirely wrong reasons. The whole punk good charlotte thing... if i see you in a style related to fake punk it screams to me "im lost, no direction, this is the only way i can fit in" but once again, my humble opinion ;) My criteria for good music most importantly is music that is open to anyone and doesnt exclude anyone, a perfect example although im sure extremely overused is the beatles. Anyone can listen to the beatles, because its not about "ice" or some troubled youth's skewed idea of "anarchy" (which by the way would be beautiful, why are all the anarchy signs made to look like they've been scrawled in blood?) its about love peace, pure love and peace. That's what made it timeless, that's what made it so successful, that's what makes the beatles music legends.
Eltiraaz
Oh can I ever relate.... When I was younger I'm sorry to say that I was what some of you may call a poser. I listened to rap music, (Eminem was my favorite actually). I listened to it because I hadn't heard anything to compete with it, and mostly because all my friends at the time were falling for it. Now if I ever saw Eminem in the flesh I would grab the heaviest object within a 5 meter radius of my person and chuck it at him as hard as I could. He has no musical talent whatsoever. Once people started to realise this he decided to go for the sick puppy approach and show everyone how tough his childhood was, poor white kid growing up shunned, and then discovering crap (oh sorry did i say that, i meant RAP :P ) and getting beat up, repeatedly (hey who could blame them?). And trying to make us all feel sympathetic. Well infortunatley some of us fell for it and his pockets grew. Now there are kids growing up feeling sorry for themselves, thinking that it will make them like him... Sorry for flaming, but man does he ever suck.
