bben46
Bben46's FAQ, Can I use the mods on my 360? Or PS3? Short answer, No. Long answer. The file structures between the 360/PS3 and PC are totally different. Even if you could get a mod made for the PC into the 360/PS3 it won't work. To get it to work, you will have to rewrite the operating system of the 360/PS3 first, then rewrite every mod to work on that new operating system. Then, the maker of the 360/PS3 doesn't want you to do that. If you modify anything in it, they will block you the next time you go on their site. (read their terms and conditions) They make their money selling you new games and not by allowing you to use free mods. Yes, there are sites that will tell you how to modify your 360 or PS3 so it can use mods. However, it is not a simple process and involves voiding your warranty, and the terms of service you agreed to when you first got the thing. - and risks turning your expensive console into a nice looking paperweight. There are currently very few working mods for Oblivion/FO3 available for the hacked consoles. And, the first time your 360 connects to the MS site - your particular box is banned forever. Even if you unhack it. (Check recent xbox news on Microsoft banning nearly a million xboxes with “No recourse” for "hacking them".) Sony has a similar policy regarding PS3, just not quite as draconian. You agreed to this when you signed up! Read the fine print -Paraphrased: You have the right to use it only in the way they want you to use it and if you ever try to use it in any other way than the one they give you, they have the right to shut you down. If you need a paperweight, go down to the building supply and buy a brick - it's cheaper. My advice, start saving now for a good PC - don't get a cheap one. Vindekarr
No, it's impossible and you WILL get booted :) No, seriously, you cant mod consoles, you'd have to be a pro hacker, and you'd have about five seconds to admire your handiwork before that conole's failsafes activate and kill it forever. The reason is because of the file structures. Modding for pc is easy because some games are specificaly made to be moddable. Oblivion and Fallout 3 use a really simple system of files and folders to convey their data, so that it's really easy to make your own content. You just need a .DDS, to give it it's visible skin and texture, an .NIF to give it it's mass and physical form, and an .ESP so the game can register the presense of the other two. Tats really easy to do, installing a mod means just thirty seconds of reading the instructions and clicking and dragging. Now, on PS3, you'd have to rip the whole bloody OS apart, and once your mod was complete, you'd be seen as a hacker, and Sony's p[roverbial eye-in-the-sky is inescapable, you'd have to watch as that console permanatnly went offline. ub3rman123
You're right about Oblivion being made simple. Most games that I've looked into the depths of the program files for have almost all of their files just compressed into huge files with odd file types. And the PS3 doesn't even have that, I don't think. And I don't believe there's even an unpacking option you can install, even for .BSA archives. Thandal
The owners of the console platforms, PS3 = Sony, Xbox = MS, (and NES & Wii = Nintendo, for completeness) do not allow "community" mods to be installed. In fact, there is a fairly tedious formal approval ("certification") process for getting anything released for use in that world, and it costs real money to go through it. As discussed above, while it might be technically possible to find a way to break into a console's programming and alter a game's code, (without totally borking either the game or the console itself. Not a trivial problem right there!) such actions would violate a number of TOS and DRM agreements that you, the purchaser/player "signed". So... as also noted above, there just aren't any. [ EDITED for even more completeness: Nintendo does have a highly restrictive "community mod" environment for the Wii. It is possible to create certain types of content for that platform, and to distribute it fairly easily and at no charge. Custom Mii, anyone? ] Edited August 19, 2010 by Thandal
