It doesn't seem to work installing using the manager, the mod i checked in the manager but in morrowind the mod doesn't work

It's not a mod (i.e. created with the construction set). You need to install it manually, read the readme. And make sure you're using MGE XE not plain old MGE.

I'm newish to gaming and got into it through Morrowind initially, followed by Oblivion. MGE looks like the biz to me and I'm glad someone above mentioned MGE XE. I didn't know it had been released.

After a load of messing around I gave up trying to install the MGE. The main issue is I need a better spec computer. However, I (eventually) configured everything correctly after loads of messing around with patches and finding out what on earth had happened to a .dll file that went awol. Maybe I should simply get the goty disk, which I believe comes fully patched by Bethesda.

I use Mac OS X mainly (on one of the early Intel iMacs) so my PC runs W7 through an old NVidia 210 and 4G of RAM. I think the CPU on the W7 machine is a 2.4. I tried putting in a quad core CPU but the motherboard simply ignored it. No idea why. Might be the motherboard is ancient.

The Windows Experience Index gives a base score of 4.2 and that's because the card only scores 4.2. Everything else is rated around 5.2 - 5.6.

Is it worth trying to boost the spec by adding the NVidia GT750ti and maybe checking to see if the motherboard will accept 8G of RAM, or should I just abandon the current machine completely? Bear in mind the CPU will probably be stuck as a dual core.

I'm not that up on hardware at the moment.

Morrowind's an old game so it's 32bit. You can patch the executable with the large address aware flag. That'll mean it can use up to 4GB of RAM. Apply after the Morrowind Code Patch

I don't really see the point for going for more than 4GB of RAM. OK, there are applications which could use it but I really don't know of any games where you'd see the difference (OK. create a RAM drive, run game from RAM drive not HDD)

I assume that you boot into Windows and it's not emulated?

Morrowind's an old game and designed for single core processors so chucking multiple cores at it won't make much difference.

The graphics card I don't know that much about.

You'll probably be most affected by the CPU. Avoid mods which can overload the game engine: don't add lots of objects to the Morrowind-rendered game world and be cautious with your MGE XE settings; avoid mods which add lots of NPCs.

Hopefully someone who know a bit more about hardware these days can chip in.

One final thing, Morrowind's engine is pretty shoddy. There're number of threads like "My PC can run Crysis x / Skyrim / whatever the graphically spangly game du jour is / etc. on Ultra High Turbo Nutter settings so I think my PC can handle Morrowind modded to the max."

Heh. Not going to happen. Similar with Oblivion really.

Thanks for the quick reply - much appreciated.

Two of my mates are avid gamers and they reckon MGE will run on my current pc with an upgraded video card. Like yourself, one of them feels more than 4G of RAM is excessive for a game like Morrowind, even the MGE- modded version. The main game file isn't huge by today's standards, nor is the MGE file.

I suppose I should just get the card anyway. I'll need it for more recent games although I'm aware even it might struggle with modded versions of games like Skyrim. That's no biggie though. I'm happy to spend a lot of time with Morrowind and Oblivion. I have a copy of Deus Ex too.

Yes, the Morrowind engine is clunky as are some of the graphics. Nevertheless, I loved it and I'm reasonably up to speed with computing, although by no means an expert.

Anyway, your input is appreciated. Btw, I don't run W7 through an enulator (as you alluded to briefly). I use a dedicated a Windows machine.
