Guars Aren't for Everyone

I am still a bit new at Morrowind, so take this as a novice's lament.

On another thread, I expressed a sadness at not having a pack mule (ala Dungeon Siege) or a treasure wagon like was available in Daggerfall. One of the repliers suggested that I could get a Pack Guar via a mod that was available for the basic Morrowind program. Sure enough, I did some hunting and found a mod written by Svenn. It inserts a vendor in Balmora who will sell you a Pack Guar for 1000 septims (or whatever the units are). If you have a little more coin, you can get a new and improved Guar for 3000, or if you are really rolling in dough, you can buy the top of the line Guar for 10000. So, following are my experiences:

First, I started a new game. I had only progressed to level 14, so no big deal. Besides I was just learning the game and had a lot of things that I had regretted at that point. One regret was that when I killed the Camona Tong (spelling?) at the Council Club in Balmora, the Siltstrider clerk must have seen me because he would no longer serve people such as I. Note: I did make it back to the fellow in Moonmoth without being arrested. He cleared me with the officials, but it did not seem to help with the Siltstrider fellow. Alas, a new game was called for anyway.

So, I began again in Sayed Neen and did all the local quests correctly this time. I got some experience and some coin and headed for Balmora. There was the Guar salesman just as he was supposed to be. I bought the cheapo Guar and headed out. What a treat! My own Pack Guar. Kinda cute in an ugly sort of way (I read that somewhere). Sure enough, I could load him down with treasure. Unfortunately I could not load him down very heavily. Well, what do you expect for 1000 septims.

I discovered several disadvantages to traveling with a Pack Guar. First of all, he is not allowed on Siltstriders or boats. He probably will not get transported by the Mage Guild transporter, but I may never find out. You see, he is too big to move into and through most of the buildings that I have tried to take him into. You may wonder why I would try. Well, I'm a Nord and we usually take our animals inside in the winter (Its just plain cold!!!). Anyway, all of this made me resigned to traveling almost everywhere by foot. The good thing is that I have seen an awful lot of Vvardenfell for a mere 17th level character.

There is another problem though. Even walking can be difficult. First of all, the Guar tends to get hung up on rocks and tree branches. I am forever turning around to see if he is there and finding that he is not. Then I look back and he is running around at the last turn trying fo find his way. I go back and snuggle up close to him and he finally gets the scent again and follows me.

There is yet another problem though. Many of the bridges in Vvardenfel, especially those in the hinterlands, are narrow. The Guar is wide. There is a problem there. It usually means finding a ford in the river or stream. That ford is often quite a ways away. But, it means that I see even more of Vvardenfell as I tramp through the brush and finally cross the river and come back to the trail.

There is yet another problem though. Those smuggler caves and ancestral burial caves are very tempting. Sometimes I get so excited about the most recent cave that I forget I have a Pack Guar in tow. I enter the cave and find that I am in the middle of the Guar. Kind of eerie. So I walk ahead and leave the Guar's entrails behind. That is fine, no harm done. Unfortunately caves are small and Guar's are big. Therefore the Guar cannot move. When I realize this, the obvious answer is to park the Guar outside. Unfortunately, I cannot click on the exit door to go back out because the only thing the program can see in front of me is "GUAR". Every click results in talking to the Guar. It makes him happy. It does not make the Nord happy at all. So I restart at my most recent save and try to remember to park the Guar by the curb when I get to each cave.

In spite of all this, I love my Guar. Well, I should love my Guar because he gave me 30,000 septims!!! Yes, that is right, 30,000 septims. The way that you store items on your Guar is that you have a barter interface. And, to make sure that you can trade things back and forth, you "temporarily" are given 30,000 septims. Normally, after the bartering session, your septim total goes back to whatever it was before (about 500 septims usually because I love being trained and can never keep a septim for very long). However, one session ended with a wonderful gift. The 30,000 septims was still in my pocket!!! I do love that Guar, but not so much that I wouldn't go back and trade him in for the super Guar. AFterall, even though the luxury model cost 10,000 septims, that is still a 20,000 profit!

So, now I have the Cadillac of all Guars. I have not been able to encumber him yet, though I imagine even Ralphy (thats what I call him) must have a strength limit. He seems to be quite a bit more attentive and seldom gets hung up on trees and rocks (once or twice so far). But I am still on foot. That means, as the quests become farther afield I will need a good safe home for my Guar. You know, I am a little leary of just leaving him set outside in a bad neighborhood. And all neighborhoods in Vvardenfell seem to be bad. But I have a solution! Since I cleared out the Council Club in Balmora again, I am going to take it over. The Guar does fit in the entry area with enough room to allow me to open the door again when I want to leave. There are all sorts of chests/barrels/bags to keep my loot in. There are two good beds to sleep in. Now with my Guar safely hostiled in the Council Club, guarding my treasure, I will be able to board the Siltstrider/boat/teleporter and know that he is always there ready for me to take on a trek through the rougher areas of Vvardenfell whenever he is needed. But I will miss him dearly when I am gone.

Thank you Svenn, for bringing us together.
