edgeburner
Should media outlets actually be held accountable for what they report?Should a mere retraction be considered accountability? Considering the fact that they are often way too late and lacking in substance and exposure.Optics are playing a huge role in today's media. A reputation can be literally ruined ten times over before the stone-cold facts are revealed.Freedom of speech is one thing, but, so is integrity. Tidus44
Title threw me at first, but responsible media is another one of those oxymorons..... like government assistance. As for holding them accountable and responsible.... who exactly would do that; other than viewers who should stop watching (or reading) the drivel the media produces? The only thing that matters to the media is viewers, thus the sensationalism of every story they deem fit to report. It isn't news anymore, its entertainment. HeyYou
Tidus is absolutely correct. There is no 'responsibility' in the media. Look at some of the 'stories' that get shoved down our throats.... Consider how many times the press has just been flat out wrong, or even blatantly lied. I don't watch broadcast television any more. It simply isn't worth watching.
Aurielius
There is no news..there is however infotainment. Welcome to the 21st century where information is abundant and critical thinking is almost extinct.

bben46
This is nothing new - yellow journalism (sensationalist misleading reporting by news outlets) was one of the major things that led up to the Spanish American war in 1898.

kvnchrist
The media is responsible. It's just responsible for contributing to it's own success by placating the core viewers of their target audience.
Beriallord
The thing about the media, and this is where bias comes in is who decides what is newsworthy and for what reasons? For example, are they only hand picking stories to make one side look like the villains when in fact both sides are equally guilty?
edgeburner
Ferguson, Illionois? Many in the media rushed to judgement (causing/contributing to death and destruction in their wake) and yet, how many appoligized...how many adimitted to their mistake? One.One reporter from WAPO actually had the courage to admitt that the "hands up don't shoot" narative was based on a lie.Just goes to show you how utterley pathetic our media outlets are today.....Don't report iike it is....spin it the way you wish it was.
