How to play sans disc

Please read the entire thing before you jump to conclusions. I know it sounds like I'm seeking advice on pirating, but I'm not.

The thing is ... I have a new computer. This computer, however, doesn't have a disc drive! So, I'm having to buy an external one.

My new computer only has a few USB ports. I want to keep my two front USB ports available as much as possible. As such, I'd prefer to only have to plug in the external disc drive when I absolutely have to.

I know there are some sites where I can get some code to make the game think that the disc is in the tray. To protect against full-blown game piracy, this code only works if the game has already been installed by legit means.

I absolutely can prove, beyond any reasonable doubt, that I bought the game legitimately. I can produce the disc, and the jewel case. I can also produce an email receipt that I obtained from Ebay when I first purchased this game.

So, now that you know I bought the game legit, and I have a legit reason for wanting this bypass code that isn't related to simply pirating the game, can somebody please send me a PM (that way, no would-be pirates could get the link from this thread) showing me where to get this bypass code?

In the future, I'll just download off steam. But I don't think I should have to pay extra to re-purchase a game I already have.

There are no "legitimate" bypass code. You are to register the game via Steam, (be it the authentic installation from the CD into your Steam account or having bought the game directly from the Steam Store). Once installed properly (and legitimately), you don't need the CD any longer to play the game, the game's been registered into your account.

So, use your DVD (disk) drive) to install the game, and then register the game to your Steam account. Done, and you can free up your USB port for something else.

There are no other legitimate way to install and register the game.

So, I've always been able to play Skyrim sans disc?

Ok, what about Oblivion? I've never needed Steam to play that. I have an equal amount of proof that I bought that game legit.

Is it optional that I could register it with Steam without having to re-buy, and not need the disc anymore, that way?

Also, what if I need to re-install either game in the event of a system crash? Would the product code not work anymore? Or, would it recognize my previous authentication in my Steam account and allow me to download the games for free, without having to rebuy?

You do not need a disc to install Skyrim. Simply activate your game by entering your game serial in the Steam client and it will download the entire game, provided that the disc you bought from eBay is an intact copy that has never been opened. If it is a used copy, then we - or rather, you - have a problem. Skyrim is a Steam exclusive game, and once the code associated with the physical copy is entered, it is locked to the Steam account of the person who entered the code.

Oblivion was released on disc before it was released on Steam so there are still copies that require the disc in the CD-ROM drive to run. But, as I said, Skyrim is a Steam exclusive title: even the purchased physical copies will install the Steam client and prompt you to activate your copy. If your copy did not install Steam and did not require activation then you should complain to the seller on eBay and ask for a refund.

Ok, I just launched up steam after instlaling it on my new computer.

I went to "Library" and tried to download Skyrim Legendary Edition.

Well, consistent with the product key I used on my Steam Account on my old computer, Skyrim is indeed in my library.

But it's not the legendary edition!

Oh, when I visit my Steam account on my firefox browser, both regular and legendary editions are said to be in my library!

But the Steam client itself will only let me download the regular version!

I paid good money for the Legendary version! Where's my damned DLCs?!

So, is there a bypass code for that? Or, are you not allowed to give that out on this website?

Unfortunately I have not encountered such a problem (I bought the DLCs one by one when they were released). Maybe some other Nexus member can suggest a solution how to force Steam to download the Legendary version.

As to "bypass" codes or no-cd cracks, we do not provide such information or tips on how to get them. We only support the official versions (with their DRM measures left intact).

There is no difference between Legendary version and purchasing each DLC separately as far as the software is concerned. If you got the Legendary version, you should have Skyrim listed in your library. Right click on the Skyrim entry, select properties. In the box that appears go to the DLC tab. You should see all the DLC installed that came with your Legendary purchase. Within the launcher you should also see each DLC's ESM file listed and marked as active when you access the Data files.

If they are not there, contact Steam support and explain the situation.

Do you have Oblivion installed already? You will need the disk for that, but once installed download and install the "Oblivion Script Extender" (http://obse.silverlock.org/) and run your game through that. It is necessary for many of the mods anyway and you will not need a disk in the drive to run your game anymore.
