1001corndogs
I've been having problems with the 1.2.0.416 patch for Oblivion. As of now, I have the 1.1.5 version (or the one before 1.2.0.416) and everything works fine. Now, when I patch the game to the most recent, something strange happens. Whenever I cast or get hit with a heal, electric, or ice spell, my weapons, shield, and enchanted items all turn a bright white, and this lasts only until the spell is finished. Also, trees turn blue every now and again, but thats not as bad as the weapons. PLEASE HELP!!! I've wanted to put some mods on, but I need the latest version of Oblivion, and I don't want to have to deal with this. Thanks, 1001corndogs Edited December 20, 2010 by 1001corndogs
LHammonds
This sounds like a problem with the shaders. Are you using Vista or Windows 7 by any chance? If so, did you install your game to the default location under C:\Program Files\ ? If yes to both of those questions, uninstall Oblivion. Then install it to someplace else such as C:\Games\Oblivion or D:\Oblivion. LHammonds

chakaru11
LHammonds is right, uninstall and reinstall in a folder like "C/user/my files" or even better, documents. As long as it is not in the program files you should be ok.

nosisab
Indeed it's very bad idea to install games in any specially protected folder in Windows Vista/7. Those include anything inside the /User (what includes the Documents folder), the Desktop and, of course any folder reserved for the system. Last but not the least, No no no for the Program files folder and it's 386 version because they too are specially protected and sadly, the default install option. The reason being what causes the issue is not the user rights to files and folders but the 3rd party programs trying to access things there. There is no problem to keep the config and support files under the documents, what must be avoided is trying to run applications from inside any these folders. The desktop must be avoided mainly because it should be so clean as possible, it's bad idea having anything more than shortcut icons there and even so it should be limited to a few. Addendum: Games should never need administrative privileges to run, albeit some may need to install because they may need to install something in the systems folder (like DLLs and so on). Most of the times the user's account is already an administrative one, what is wrong but a sad necessity, needing to run as "the administrator" is just consequence of that 3rth part applications trying to access resources and does not exist if the game is installed outside the protected folders. The bottom line is: If one need to run games as "Da Administrator" he/she is doing or already did something very wrong. Keep in mind than the application is Not the user, although inherits most privileges from the account they are still different things. Sometimes they can be in fact confounded but the security mechanism may prevent access for the application itself or any other (like utilities and even certain mods) programs to work properly under protected folders which would allow anywhere else.
