I agree with Psijonica on that.

I really think that it's near sighted of Bethesda too, because if all we had was the base game without the freedom to distribute mods at no cost, then most of us would have quit this game long ago.

I use the words "without the freedom" because a new Fallout is coming and a TES 6 is in the works, so if this experiment from Valve is successful then I would say that the next logical greed fueled leap would be to maybe create a more closed system where all mods have to be installed via Steam or Bethesda's online market place.

While I am certain there may be some modders who would still want to distribute free mods. I am more concerned about the curtailing of creative freedom, because that hypothetical marketplace might or might not object to a mod due to sexual, graphic, or otherwise socially unacceptable content. Not even that, I seen a lil'Wayne shrine on the nexus once, I found it funny, was not interested in it. But the fact that someone had the freedom to do that to a game is great, and I can see creative freedom like that being curtailed in such a setting.

I only got /into/ modding because I could play around with a bunch of mods to begin with.

If I have to pay a fortune just to experiment with mods... I never would have gotten into modding to begin with.

@Brumbek

I too am very torn for sure. I've spent well over 5000 hours on my mod in the 1+ year it's been in development, have a half million views, 100K downloads, 2000 endorsements and maybe $120 in total donations? if I were working at McDonalds during that entire time instead of modding I could have made over $20,000. Yes I do mod because I enjoy it, but I think the VAST majority of users takes us for granted under the pretense of it being a community aimed effort, which I am very big on, but the fact of the matter is that most people won't pay for anything they can get for free if given the choice, sad fact of the matter. I do think though that the lack of exposure of the donation option is at least a little to blame. Half of folks who would donate don't even notice it and I know that if it popped up a little more often like on the download sever like the endorsement reminder does, more folks might give a few dollars. I know I certainly didn't notice the button until a user asked if I accepted them and then I looked into it and realized I could set the button up.

It's a hard thing because there are so many legal and ethical ramifications to consider

the thing that upset me was the fact that (A CERTAIN MOD THAT I SHALL NOT NAME) uses resources acquired !FOR FREE! from over a dozen other modders and then puts it up on STEAM asking for $5 and conveniently leaving them out in the description there, claiming it is all his work.

The reason I had quit modding for quite a long time was when I had bought a D!Zone disk and found a couple of my .WAD's in there. (the "producers" literally went to Doom modding forums and swiped every single mod they could find...slapped them on a CD and sold it.) Sure I had put them out there for free, and never expected anything for it at all... ... ...but then someone came along and made money off of my good will. Years passed and seeing communities like Nexus pop up talking about modding is a worthwhile hobby and peoples contributions should be respected and such...I started off and on again...Anything I felt was good enough to share, I did...and just that made me happy... ... ...And I know some modders put in LOTS of work into their mods...but they did it for their own enjoyment, to build their skills, to work with members of the community they respected, and maybe get scouted by a game company (we've had several members here get hired by companies if I remember right?). But now... we're all the way back to what made me give up all those years ago.

It did piss me off enough to finally finish the only mod of mine anyone ever liked (a remake of someone else's mod... who even though I rebuilt it from scratch, still felt he deserved the credit)...but after I finish? ... ... ...I'm probably out for good.

... ... ...Sorry for being longwinded.

I don't accept the "I don't make a lot of money" argument to charge people for mods. I don't have a job and have had almost zero income due to a severe back injury a year and a half ago and i wouldn't dare charge for one of my mods.

I know i'm not on the level of some of the mod makers around here but i've had a couple pretty successful Skyrim mods and in no way would i EVER put them behind a paywall. And i'm almost literally at the bottom of the barrel financially.

Modding is supposed to be a community activity that we all share in to have fun and make our games more interesting. Not to turn it into some panhandlers corner or elitists club where you have to pay to get in.

But Valve is Valve. Collect whatever they can for doing nothing and in the process they are starting to chip away and destroy a thriving modding community with their greed. And people are people... It's unfortunate that modders will go this way but they will because why not, right?

I won't even get into stolen assets and the whole mess this will cause but it bound to be fun to watch.

I am shocked like most of us here and I know that nobody can know how this will end but I hope that it wont affect older games like Fallout New Vegas or Oblivion or the whole Nexus community.

+1 To Rigmor.

How many mods use SKSE or other assets that aren't theirs? It's unfair to take payment for something you may have spent alot of time on...but isn't all yours. Rigmor you earn mine and many other's respect.

While I currenlt don't use your mod (and never have), I may in the future, and when I do I will surely hand a few dollars over as thanks for your work if you accept donations. Don't cave in like these greedy traitors.

While I can understand some people's "need" to make some money off their work, theres just too many things wrong with it. Plus, if they really can't work on their mods because of limitations, then stop. Modding is about the enjoyment, not about money, and if you cease to enjoy it or simply cannot do it, then stop.

EDIT: LOL one of my posts was deleted, nice censorship nexus mods! Can't believe they are supporting steam's workshop BS. Edited by HeloMAN

The legal grey area for mods grows ever thinner.

I'm not entirely comfortable with this. There are pro's and con's to each side, but also a host of issues that can come with it. Gopher and TotalBiscuit both have videos up on YouTube that discuss these issues, so I'll not rehash them here.

I don't like paywalls. Period. This just seems like a way for companies to slop together the bare minimum to make a game and have modders do the rest.
