2$ on SMIM, 2$ on another mod, then another... And we reach 50-100$ only on what we have installed right now. I appreciate your work Brumbek, but please consider at least leaving your current work on Nexus, and if you want to update your mod for the money, then upload the updated version on Steam.

Edit: After reading your replies on this discussion, I saw that you will upload the updates on Nexus. Thank you very much! I am afraid that not all mod developers will be like you though :( Edited by dreamer2008

While I love using mods on several games, simply put.....if mods began to carry a price tag...the community will die, and fast.

I for one will NEVER pay for a mod. Not ever! Donating because you enjoy, fine. Great even. Paywall mods? Out of the question! There are just far too many things wrong with this to name.

This is just a matter of bad old fashioned GREED! Nothing more.

Some mods are really great, with authors spending countless hours. They deserve to get paid for that, and of course now we should see more finished and really good quality mods. But there's lot of trashy mods that's not really earned the pay they started to ask for. And the mods will start disappear form Nexus (at least those who only need Skyrim, no 3rd party software like SKSE). And its not the bad thing, now they can be paid for a hard work. I would mind supporting someone who makes really high quality stuff, something that is not just a rip off of something based on someone else work, or used most of the assets from that other mod and if price is right. Like this guy who made Drakul, Medusa and so on armors. Those are insane, really high quality and he deserves to be rewarded. But Mod like Wet & Cold, I know its great mod and all, everyone likes it, but 5$ price for it? Thats the price of whole DLC. Almost price of Dragonborn or Dawnguard DLC. And you get much more from those DLCs while mod offers only rain drips, rain/snow/ash blind and steams from mouth on cold weather. Does it really deserves 5$ ? Its up to people I guess.

hey guys!

First, thanks for all the work you did an do on the Nexus community, it's just amazing!

Secondly, I think each modders should quickly put their work and their name on steam to prevent any "mod-stealing", because i dont think the legislation is clear in this area... Then, if you don't to make people pay for your mods through steam, just create a donation-link, and a link to the nexus! I think many people would be pleased to give you some money for the great work you did, but also feel it would be totaly unfair to pay 75% to Valve and 25% to you!

And finally, and it has been well discribe by Dark0ne, it would break the spirit of a free and indpendant modder community to fall in their TRAP!

Peace

Do not make it. Having the possibility to Donate should be a great thing, but being FORCED to donate to play mods... Just nope ? Mods are not some sort of DLCs, stop acting like it's EA Games. Yes, great modders should be rewarded, but not by placing that "paywall".

I am completely in favor of paid mods, and I have no issue with the very fair 25% revenue share.

However, none of the mods I have released on the Nexus will become paid mods, exclusively or otherwise.

Master of Disguise, Better Favor Jobs, and so on will remain free, and I will continue to provide updates and support when I have time.

If I develop any paid mods, they will be new mods.

All I can say about this is that it's made me reconsider which mods I download and which I will not. Since I'm starting a new game I may re-restart again and remove about 90% of the mods I have. I have several mods I use including Frosfall, iNeed, Realistic Water Two, Campfire, Wet and Cold, Holidays, the list goes on and on. And some of these mods I really have no problem paying a small miniscule one-time fee for as if they get continued support they're worth it in my eyes. But there is one glaring problem with this whole setup.

Compatibility.

Many mods require patches or fixes to be compatible with one another. Want to use Frostfall with Complete Crafting Overhaul Remade? Gonna need a patch there. Mammoth mods like SkyRe, Requiem, and PerMa require huge patches that teams dedicate themselves to making so they play nicely with other mods. With certain mods going pay-to-download (Or as some users are going, 30/60 time periods before the mod becomes free.) it's going to cause a great deal of incompatibilities. If someone is forced to pay for a mod now it very well may also make other mod authors less inclined to create a patch between two other mods.

Say author of mod X creates patches so their mod works with Y. The author of Y now starts charging for their mod. The author of X disagrees with the thought of charging for mods so they don't buy Y. Compatibilty between X and Y are now no longer maintained. Likewise if only older, outdated versions of X mod are available and you have to pay for updated versions of it now there are less chances that X mod will have compatibility patches to make it work with Y or Z mods because the only free version of X that exists is outdated. Authors could create a patch to make the paid version work with Y and Z but it still alienates those who either cannot afford to pay for it, or refuse to because of morals.

And the problem with Steam is it force-updates mods meaning a user may unintentionally break compatibility and possibly their save because the mod updated. Again, I'll probably pay for a couple mods I deem essential and worth it to buy, but for now I may end up being more selective of which mods I try and which I won't.

My biggest issue with this is not that you have to pay for the mods, but fact that Valve wants to cash in other peoples hard work. Work that could easily be distributed through other sources like the nexus. If most of money went to the mod makers I would have less of a problem with it.

When the dust settles, it' might be time for the nexus made a counter offer to modders to keep the power in the hands of the consumer and the developer and not in the greasy mits of a big cooperations like Valve. Maybe just a button you'd have to tick off to not make a donation, or something similar.

The saddest thing is that's probably a test before Fallout 4 or TES6 release! the Nexus should probably encourage users to donate, and modders to create donation links, because I totaly agree with you that modders are allowed to make money out of their workn but maybe it would be more in the spirit of the mod community to donate, and let the people unable to pay free to use mods, for the love of modded Games :D

(sry for my bad english bro)
