Many mod authors put a lot of work into their creations and I believe this is a great opportunity for the community to give back.

I have modded for years and only one person has ever donated money to me. This is an obvious sign that the donation system does not work.

No one is entitled to anything, let alone free mods. People releasing mods for free should have gotten a lot more respect and thanks for the amount of time they spent on their creations.

The community needs to settle down and realize that in the long run this is a good thing and will result in much better mods being made.

 

This development has reinvigorated my interest in Skyrim modding and I will definitely continue to mod for Fallout 4 (whenever it is announced...E3 please!?!)

 

With every purchase of my mod, Skyrim Nexus will be getting a share of the money.

 

Please be understanding of this decision. I did not make it lightly.

All of my other 7 mods will be Nexus exclusives and not ever be ported to the Steam workshop.

 

I hope you are ready to be held accountable as a profesional and have your content owned and distributed by valve. Good luck in the ensuing shitstorm that you have signed up for. Welcome to hell enjoy your stay.

That is what I'm interested to know as well particularly after reading a Reddit post from a former modder who pulled his mod from Steam Work Shop. He also implied that The Nexus is listed as a curated Workshop and are profiting from Workshop sales. Of course I have no idea if it's true are not since the author has deleted his reddit account but here is a link

Thanks much to all for the thoughts! I'm withholding using SW for now. I want a Mod Greenlight system that recognizes ESTABLISHED mods like SMIM. But that probably will never happen. Sigh...we'll see. Thanks.

@marthgun: 25% is crazy low. The split should be the other way around since Valve/Bethesda already make HUGE sums from the sale of the games themselves. That is chiefly why I haven’t uploaded SMIM to SW. It does feel like they are taking big advantage of me, unlike Dark0ne who isn’t some uber-rich guy and lets me keep all my donation money.

@Blitz54: waiting is a wise move. I plan to wait, despite the feeling that I’m the dumb one for not jumping in and laughing as crazy people pay me money…which I only get 25% off. I just don’t like being extorted or extorting others…which SW sort of feels like ATM.

@Farvahar: well said.

@dreamer2008: yes, it is the bad apples that spoil it for us. I will never hide SMIM updates behind paywalls. Even if it would possibly bring in more income for the small price of my soul, ha!

chickensheep. They had two DLC's in the works for Skyrim that they abandoned when they started work on their next project. Most people assume that to be Fallout 4. From memory the two canceled DLC's were rumored to deal with one tying up of the civil war quest line and even possibly appointing a new emperor of Tamriel (perhaps even yourself) and the other delving in to the disappearance of the Dwemer. Here`s how I see it. as a modder.

 

I too have spent hours on my mods. Hours. DAYS. And I would never charge for them. Donations are OK (as they are totally optional), but I would never charge.

 

Why?

 

Simple. NOBODY FORCED ME TO MAKE MY MODS. Nobody forced me to spend all those hours making them. It was entirely MY decision made knowing full well I do it for fun and practice and NOT PROFIT.

It is THAT simple.

 

So all the "Jeez, I spent so much time, and now I could make money, I`m torn" talk just dosen`t fly with me. Sorry guys. Time to get real tho.

They think work=money regardless if its fun optional or whatever. Welcome to Capitalism where literally only money matters, not friends, not community, not fun, only money.
