Acknowledging the fault as status quo is not a solution.

As far as endorsements go, well they are a kind of thumbs up to other users looking for a mod. They are not a thank you to the modder they are not some kind of psuedo payment. All it does is say "I think other people will like this. They do nothing for the modder at all, in fact you are not even engaging the modder by endorsing the mod.

I just recalled your release of recurve bows on STEAM..You explained in your description and then REPEATEDLY in your comments that the mod required DB and NTT(master)...people continued to whine that they couldn't afford a DLC and a NEXUS membership. You were quite pointed in you assurance that not only was NEXUS... FREE...but that you yourself had downloaded literally a Terabyte of content and NEVER PAID A DIME.

Now the silly Skyrim fiasco is over, our attention should turn to helping Zenimax make the planned PAID modding for Fallout 4 as successful as possible. These are my thoughts.

1) don't charge for mods- make the mods available via a MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE.

2) Zenimax will be responsible for paying mod authors from the funds raised by the subscription service.

3) Zenimax will have Fallout 4 coded in such a way that the company receives a real-time indication of all mods currently in use by Fallout 4 players. This way Zenimax KNOWS the true value of mods by their actual USAGE.

4) Mod authors will be paid mostly by the above usage figures AND by an assessment of mod complexity (the effort expended to make the mod).

5) all mods will be assigned a COMPLEXITY DESIGNATION. So a simple single weapon mod would be CLASS 1 - the lowest earning type of mod for a given usage figure. A complete game experience altering mod, or a mod adding a major new region, like iNPC, would be CLASS 10, and earn the most at a given usage rate.

6) Zenimax would be free to offer special rewards and prizes based on various criteria- all to help encourage the participation of more modders.

Think about this. My ideas solves the problem of keeping the incentive of players trying and installing dozens to hundreds of mods at the same time- which is exhaustively expensive and faces mod clashing problems when the user has to pay per mod.

My ideas solve the can-of-worms that arise when a mod author gets to set their own price.

My ideas solve the problem of what happens when certain mods don't work with one another. With mod success judged PURELY on the number of mods installed on games that Fallout 4 players are actually using, the criteria for mod success is PURE and HONEST. If 10,000 people are currently using a mod, that figure MEANS everything. If 10,000 people have downloaded a mod, that figure means next to NOTHING.

Forcing Zenimx to run a subscription service makes them take FULL legal and moral responsibility for their profit making machine- as it should be. Steam can still be used for this model, but so could Nexus (or both). And think- you the user no longer have to worry if a mod doesn't work- doesn't work as advertised, doesn't work on your machine, or you plain don't like it after downloading and installing. YOU, the user, didn't pay for that mod- you paid for the right to download ANY mod for Fallout 4.

A subscription service solve ALL the intractable problems of paid modding, and hurts would-be modding conmen. YOU would only continue to subscribe if you felt the service still offered something worthwhile (mod updates would require a current subscription). The need to please YOU would give Zenimax all the incentive in the world to make paid Fallout 4 mods desirable.

Can anyone offer any sensible reasons why a subscription model would be anything other than optimal?

Thanx, as always for your well thought reply's and comments Dark0ne. Your cool head and direction to appropriate thinking helped a lot as this developed. Miss communication is the bane of our times. Perhaps we've been given a great lesson in true communication through this. In all the stories I read and opinions I heard, I still am not sure what Bethesda and valve were really trying to accomplish. I think maybe they forgot that they have heart, we all do sometimes. Certainly the modders of this community have heart. Significant enough for B. & V. and steam to listen. It will be hoped that as we move on from this, we'll all be able to get a good laugh out of it. We can really be silly sometimes. One thing that has come of it for me has been a deeper understanding of how much some modders put into, Time and Energy wise, to their works. Love of the craft goes a long way, yet that Love can go both ways buy tapping the donate button and recognizing some of the work has true worth. My Skyrim experience has been fully upgraded buy the many mods that I enjoy. I can't imagine playing a vanilla game again.

My personal take on this whole sorry mess is that the mod users have just won a pyrrhic victory here and driven away or disheartened some talented mod-makers. Yes the mods will be free but there won't be as many of them and some of the ones that are produced won't have as many features or be as well supported as they might otherwise be.

I think that this situation needs to be addressed and maybe you can help Dark One, currently donations are rarely made and perhaps this could be improved if incentives were offered, perhaps maybe a new tab on the mods page listing those who have donated, maybe some sort of ranking system based on number of mods donated to (like Ebay stars?) It also would be nice to have a system where people could pledge donations dependant on new mods or new versions of existing mods being produced in order to incentivise their creators.

I know that it might be difficult to incorporate the above within the nexus code structure and I'll probably be flamed by the more rabid elements of the community but unless we find a tangible way for the community to show it's appreciation of the hard work some of these content creators put in then we will lose them and be worse off for it, for man cannot live by endorsements alone.

we did it guys we saved modding and all it took endless threats of violence and piracy. fear mongering and rumor spending. create huge rift between mod users and modders which drove some talented modders away maybe forever

but we did we saved whatever was left from what we managed to destroy ourselves.

everyone who joined nexus within last week deserves a big pat on the back, we couldnt have done it without you!!!

People do not want to pay for mods = they are right
Modders would like to get some $ from their work = they are right too

Why not use the same concept as youtube ?

Ads are paying the youtubber, not the users.
Why not doing the same for mods ?

- Modder get some $ depending on mod popularity / page views / ads clicked
- player can download for free all mods.
- A moderation, a rating system and users reviews to keep things in the right way like it is already in place here.

So only Advertisers pay like everywhere else on the internet...
It's not the mod itself which is rewarded, it's popularity and audience like any youtube video.

Sound too simple or ?
