@foster xbl

Doesn't what happened give you a clear indication of what the public are willing/not willing to accept in regards to modding?

If you are modding for the money then you have made an error in judgement.

Modding was humming along just swimmingly until money was introduced.
Now look where we are.

I'm going to say something that's going to get many people upset with me, but I feel it needs to be said.

I was a mod user for years before I ever made a single mod. Now that I have a number of mods released for several games, I hardly claim to be a 'success'. My download and endorsement numbers are a long far cry from the big mods on here. I suspect they're even below average (I haven't bothered to find out). The point is, I can see this issue from both sides. I have crafted my small mods with just as much care, dedication, and devotion as ANY mod author. Time invested has no bearing on those things. I have always striven to make certain, within the limits of my ability, that my mods were RIGHT before they ever saw the light of day on here. My NAME is on them.

With the background out of the way, here's the statement that's going to get me flack:

There are always going to be self-entitled mod users. That's how it is. If the fallout from this means that mod authors that have consistently shown a prima donna attitude get their knickers in a bunch and take their marbles and go home, so be it. They are the ones least likely to help out the budding new mod authors. While the loss of whatever fantastic mods they have made or may make will be a loss to the community, there's always going to be new enthusiastic talent with fresh ideas ready to step up and contribute. Those fledgling modders are the ones we need to encourage in every way possible. Those are the ones that will decide the ultimate future of modding.

Fire away :)

Oh, and Korodic, if you you donate $1.99 to every author of every mod you are using in your Skyrim game right now, I will apologize for calling you a hypocrite.

"@Korodic I thought it was clear, but let me spell it out for you:

By whining about not being able to sell your mods when you have used the free mods of other people for years (and probably used the work of others in one way or another for your own mods), makes you a hypocrite."

Another foolish point of view..... by this reasoning anyone who writes a book and sells it is a hypocrite for "standing on the shoulders' of the person to taught them to read, right?

I really don't buy Bethesda's rationale. Charging for mods would certainly lead to more mods, but the vast bulk of the increase would likely be people looking to make a quick buck with a low-quality, unfinished mod or a retexture. That's hardly an improvement on the modding scene. Plus, do most players looking for mods even use the Steam Workshop? I tried it way back when it was new, but the Nexus is vastly superior in many ways, so putting the paygate on the Workshop isn't going to do for Skyrim what Valve is claiming it did for their games.

Then, there's the cut they took. It's outrageous. They left Skyrim to die years ago. They haven't fixed the bugs they left, they haven't released any new DLC, they've done nothing with the game for years. They didn't even bother to release half of the really cool things their developers came up with in that showcase years ago (remember the giant mudcrab, footprints, and the actual changing seasons?)

So, NOW they come out of the woodwork looking to cash in on other peoples' work? That's hardly ethical or fair. Plus, the IP argument doesn't hold muster to me as some mods don't use Bethesda's IP at all. What claim does Bethesda have that they deserve almost half of any money made off of mods? Beyond providing us with the game, which we already paid for, and the tools to edit it (which they generously gave us for free), what did they do to help create the mod? It's really hard to buy the line that this wasn't a cash grab when you look at the situation.

I'm sure it takes money to make their games moddable. Well, scratch that. I honestly had no idea it took a lot of money to make games moddable. So, if they feel that this is costing them too much, which is the vibe I'm getting from that part of their blog, they could charge for the Creation Kits in the future. I would fully support that - that's something that they built that they didn't have to.

However, they did listen to us (and quickly, I might add), so at least part of my faith in them has been restored. This was a mistake from the beginning and I hope they've realized that.

@OiramX5 I don't agree with the current system and would not have used it in its current state. I only wanted it to be adjusted. But that's only half of the problem.

The other half is the people trying to deny us an option OFFICIALLY given to us because they feel modding should be free (regardless of what anyone else may think). This ideology is even present within this thread.

@foster xbl
For free non paid mods. I did not make them so somebody could make a profit. If I made them so someone could make a profit they would be on TurboSquid with the rest of my models I am selling.

I made them so people can make houses that are not the exact same as any other farmhouse and furnish them with a complete set of furniture. To give away for free so players can have a new and unique home.

Another reason they are here and not at TurboSquid is so I can get some pleasure seeing them used and how they are used.

"Doesn't what happened give you a clear indication of what the public are willing/not willing to accept in regards to modding?"

the same things were said from day one (and still are) of DLC, and like it
or not, Dlc has been fully accepted and become the new norm.

Robin, I don't normally comment on your blog posts, but if we could like blog posts, I'd like yours. I also feel bad for Bethesda. I responded to their original blog post about their rationale and in that response, I said that I thought one are that would benefit from a paid mod scheme would be animations and modelling, creature modelling in particular. On the other hand, TES modding is almost 15 years old and suddenly introducing a paid scheme, especially so long after the game's release, is not something that can be done without a lot of upset. TES mods are too tightly intertwined for a paid system to really work.
