Hmm... registered here than Wow account compromised

Not saying it is 100%, but I haven't played WoW in 2 years and within a day of registering on this forum, my email got a pile of emails from Blizz about all my chars being restored one by one, and then another one about my account being locked for 'investigation'

Turns out that the email/pass I used for this forum was also my battle.net login, go figure

Changed my b.net password, sure enough, WotLK trial was added to reactivate it and my WoW account is locked. Don't really care, never intend to play it again, but just saying, something to look into/be aware of I suppose

This is the first I have seen of a WOW account being affected by our problem. All of the others just claimed an increase in spam mail - specifically a certain type of ads. This indicates to me that while the email used to register here may have been stolen, It's likely that the passwords were not.

More recently, Dec 13, the entire Gawker group of sites (Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Gawker, Jezebel, io9, Jalopnik, Kotaku, Deadspin, and Fleshbot) was hit by a scumbag who not only got the emails, but cracked their encrypted log on and got both emails and passwords for 1.4 million accounts - then posted them on *not allowed*. (Thank the pirates for making this possible) If you ever had an account on one of the dozen or so Gawker family of sites - your info was passed out to any pirate that wanted to either spam you or trash your other accounts where you used the same password. If you use the same password for many accounts - Change it!

The hacking we had recently should not affect any accounts that were created after the hack announcement date. As far as I'm aware all data is now secure again so if people who have registered accounts in the last month or so are getting SPAM on unique email addresses used just for the Nexus then I would be very interested to hear from them.

WOW account hacks and email spam have risen massively since the release of Cataclysm. One of my housemates gets around 4 spam emails a day from fake addresses trying to get his account details despite not playing in years. Just be vary of scams.

Looks like I get another chance to make a suggestion.

Use a different password for every site / account you have. I would also recommend have multiple email addresses...one for friends and family, another for registering at miscellaneous places and another for frequently accessed sites.

I have my hotmail account configured to only allow emails to get through that is on my "white / approved" list and this is the one I use for registering just about everywhere.

If it sounds like too many to keep track of, don't worry, you can use a simple text file to store all your IDs / passwords / URLs in or you go to a bit more secure and use a portable app that can run straight off your USB drive called Keepass.

If for whatever reason your email / password combo is compromised, simply have the web site generate a new password for you, access the site and create your own unique password and update your Keepass (or text file) database. A hacker with your email address and password for one site should NEVER be able to access any other site with that combination.

And the password to access you email should also be unique and not shared with any other email or web site.

Something that i realized.. some time after the nexus got hacked i received an email from jagex saying to confirm my email change. i obviously cancelled this action as i never asked to do that. When i tried to log in my account didn't respond. I had to fill a from to get my account back.

My brother and his family are big time into WOW and he serves as Admin for their guild. Apparently hacking accounts on their site is big business. I have seen him on more than one occasion trying to help recover someone's lost characters and goods. He has also showed me people illegally selling gold for real life profit. As shady as a real drug deal. I do not envy any of the Nexus staff for the headaches this can cause and I am glad I prefer to play Oblivion, which is not online!

^ This

Even without being registered for WoW with some of my e-mail accounts, I still receive a "stolen account" notice on those accounts from time to time just as part of normal spam or because someone hacked a listing for a mmo site and is playing the odds. ALL of these have linked back to a dummy scam server where they ask you to verify your account. There may still be some legitimate notices out there, and there may still be people trying to brute force into an account they know exists, but most of these are just scams and you should always check who the sender is as well as where the e-mail is linked before doing anything.
