New to fallout 3, a couple of questions

Which tool should I use to install mods? When modding Oblivion I use Wrye Bash, what is the equivalent for Fallout3?

Which tool should I use for fixing load order? For Oblivion I use BOSS, what is the equivalent for Fallout3?

Does any mod exist for Fallout3 that is similar to the Oblivion mod FormID Finder?

Any recommendations of essential mods?

Wrye Flash

B.O.S.S.

I am not familiar with Oblivion, but there are console commands that you can use to obtain the base object ID, as long as you have FOSE installed. Open the console, left click on the object/npc and the formid will appear at the top of your screen. Type in GBO, press enter and the base object id will be displayed.

Thanks for the answer.

It's very confusing when no stickied posts/guides mention Wrye Flash and only other installers like FOMM even though Wrye Flash is both more powerful and easier to use. With Wrye Flash it took me 10 seconds to install a mod but with FOMM I tried for 20 minutes without succeeding before I gave up and started this thread.

Ok. I've never tried LOOT since people say BOSS is still the best tool for Oblivion but if LOOT is better for Fallout3 then I will go with that. It would be good if all experts said what they are using.

BOSS hasn't been updated for some time and doesn't look like it's being supported any more. That's why LOOT is the defacto mod sorter now.

that's because the people who made BOSS went on to make LOOT.

Personally, I would not subject my game to LOOT. If you look around in the "my game crashes" postings, you will find the worst load orders generated by LOOT.

In my opinion, any mod file sorter that places compatibility patches to load before the mod they are patching, does not work correctly.

LOOT may be fine for Fallout: New Vegas and Skyrim, but it does not sort Fallout 3 mods correctly.

@M48 - most of our users are now using LOOT - and very few have the problems you seem to think are rampant - LOOT has not stood still and has been updated many times since it came out - have you actually tried it lately? Or are you basing that opinion on info that is old? LOOT will not show the same load order as BOSS, because it uses a completely different way of establishing load order. Not every mod has to be in the exact place in the order. For many mods it really doesn't matter where they are. For others, as long as one specific mod is loaded before another specific mod it is fine. For any that you feel the need, it is very easy to set up a metadata rule for your load order that it will always remember. I have used LOOT for Oblivion and FO3 with no problems. There is ONE metadata rule I have found to be necessary, and that one is for a specific pair of mods in FONV.

@bben - I am not basing my opinion on old data, but daily posting of LOOT load orders that do not work. As I stated in my previous post, read some of the "my game crashes on start" or any of the other crash reports. It is a daily occurrence.

Are you saying that the makers of LOOT know better then the mod authors, such as the FWE team that states how to arrange their mod?

Or the makers of compatibility patches that state the patch must go after the mods they patch?

I am glad that LOOT works for you. I would not use it, my load order was set by BOSS and is stable. I have no reason to use LOOT and then have to rearrange it.

And not having your computer experience, I, like many others here, have no idea what a "metadata rule" is. I do know what works for me and has worked for others that have posted load order issues.
