Help with PC Build (SSD or Monitor)

Hey, I posted this on the PC hardware forum, but I think this might be an even better place to ask.

I'm making the jump from consoles to PC and I'm very much new to all of this. While I'm focused on Skyrim now, I'm also really looking forward to games like Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid and Starcraft 2 LotV. I recently had someone help me with a $1300 build, the specs being:

I5 4690k

GTX 980 Ti 6GB

Corsair 8 GB 2x4

MSI Z97 PC Mate

Originally, they suggested I get a 128 ssd, but another person suggested that I go higher seeing as how I wanted to mod the game. So, I was thinking about getting an Evo 850 500gb.

However, I'm considering the 250gb now because my monitor sucks and I would like to get a new one as well (my current one is an old Acer X223W 1680x1050 60 hz) and by going with the 250gb, I'd be able to get the monitor sooner rather than 2 months from now. Also, if I were to go with the 500gb, would I be able to run the new PC on my current monitor? So what's the best SSD for this build as well as a monitor.

For Skyrim, a 60Hz monitor is enough, but the resolution is a little bit... non-Standard? Dunno if that changes stuff like settings for ENBs.

As for SSD size, I've got a 250GB one and my Skyrim folder alone takes up 53GB of that. And I'm not yet done modding it.

I'd say go for the 250GB SSD now and save up a little for a 1440p monitor.

Wow! Especially with this graphics card you will be able to play with tons of 2K/4K mods and ENB and have stable 60fps! I have a 128GB SSD where only the OS, some programmes and Skyrim (heavily modded) is installed and I have only 14GB free disk space left. So if you are planning to install other games on the SSD I would also recommend to go with a bigger one.

Hi

With that rig you need a 4k or a 1440 144mhz monitor.

For games like Skyrim & Witcher 3 I recommend a Samsung U28D590D ‑ 28" UHD monitor.

With it I can run the original Xcom at 64X480 to Fallout 3 at 4K. I run Skyrim at 1440 with ENB.

If you are going for a 1080 monitor a GTX 980 will do. It will run Skyrim at 140fps at 1080 vanilla & 60fps ENB.

I only bought a GTX 980 ti sc to run Skyrim at 1440 with ENB at 60fps.

I am not a fan of having a small SSD & a large slow HDs. Right now I am using a 1tb 10,000rpm HD & I will be replacing it with a 1tb SSD later this year.

The CPU is the right one for Skyrim. It needs a CPU with good singe thread performance & the I5 4690k has it.

Have you checked whether your SSD is affected by the bug that causes them to slow down when filled up?

See, once FO4 releases, I will be modding that as well and probably put it on the SSD. Going with the 250GB I'm afraid that having both games could be troublesome. Also, so many others keep saying go with the 500 which I may do because I found a 1440p monitor (Acer G257HU smidpx 25-Inch WQHD (2560 x 1440). I'm just not sure about it because it's pretty cheap for a 1440p so something has to be wrong with it. But thanks, man.

From what I've been reading, it says that you need 2 980ti's to run at 4k or else you get stuttering. Has this happened to you? Also, I've been seeing that the GTX 980 isn't as good relative to the price and some suggested that I get a 970, but again, it seems like a lot of newer games will put a strain on it with ultra settings. The GTX 980 Ti seems like the logical choice at this point, but it's just so damn expensive. As for the monitor, I was thinking in terms of of the image rather than performance as I've been reading that 144hz is great for competitive FPS play which I won't be using it for which is why I'm looking on at 1440p 60hz.

Bear in mind that you should leave 10% of the ssd free to keep it healthy and fast. If I had picked 250gb ssd for system + games I would be kicking myself for doing it now. It would simply be not enough for all my games and mods (fallout included) that I want to load fast.

Buying monitor is always the worst part for me. Worring about dead pixel warranty policies (some brands have up to 16 dead / discolored pixels policy), backlight bleed and flicker. It's better to take your time, do some research on the model type you are interested in (tn vs ips, 60hz vs 144hz, G sync, response time, ghosting, rgb%, etc) and it's reliability.
