things in TES4 that scare/startle you

sorry if there's already a topic about this, i did a keyword search and nothing came up.

A few things that startled me the first time I played Oblivion:

I was making my way through the starting dungeon for the first time, in awe of the ass-kickery of the game, when I turned the corner and encountered my first zombie, nose-to-undead nose.

Later that night I was rummaging through some crates in someone's basement when a messenger decided to deliver me a message then, I almost crapped my pants when she came at me from nowhere.

A few weeks ago I (I can't remember the details perfectly) was in a building when an NPC came through the door right next to me and started a conversation, after a few choice words (no one was home) :) , I effectively ruined that NPC's day with my claymore.

i am suprised when i played the dark brotherhood quest. suprised at how the developer can publish a game that talk in detailed about a process of murdernig someone. cruel part of the game.

i am more interested in the subtle feeling you get when traveling at night and absorbing the atmosphere. i want to be suprised by the enemy, not some annoying music that come up and give it away. i really like the idea of mods that make night darker, but i dont like any right now, it makes too dark that i cant see anything without a light spell.

The boys at Bethesda took great pains to ease the player into the world of murderers. The first gaggle of "victims" are folks who have raped, plundered, robbed, and murdered the innocent. In a dark, unfair way you're dispensing justice in some of the quests (not all of them, of course). So the overt "This is as evil as one can conceive!" perspective you allude to here doesn't exist.

As on to the topic: Trolls. I play with the music off, which means the only audio cue I get may very well be the sound of the first blow landing on my back. Trolls are notoriously quick on the trigger, with scant little warning before they strike. Most other critters make some vocalization and then charge, giving you enough time to ready yourself. Trolls don't do that. Their warble can only be heard just as they're closing in for the attack.

I rarely ready my bow unless I'm making a poisoned sneak-shot, but sometimes I keep it out when I expect to make another soon. I've startled myself a few times reacting to SOMETHING ON MY LEFT - oh wait, it's just my bow. *grumbles and stows it*

Like the original poster, I've turned the corner and come face to face with something hostile. It definitely gets the blood going.

But the worst thing, really, is fighting underwater. Poor visibility, an alien environment, having to move and fight and defend in three dimensions, can't use most spells, and you're usually up against slaughterfish (which look and act just as vicious as their name suggests). Even with the Jewel of the Rumare or some other water breathing item, I try to avoid it whenever I can.

On the road to Chorrol you pass through a Fort built over the road. First time out, recent experience already taught me that there is propably something with teeth roosting in there...so I approach carefully.

No telltale music (which to me is the equivalent of the hair on the back of my neck rising) so I stride on with more confidence, and even add a little hopskip as there seems to be absolutely nothing about to sink its teeth into me.

Exciting the arch on the far side, a furry voice drawls in my ear ' Yourrr money orr yourrr liiife...'

Picture me on a tar road with blinding light.

The next time it was a troll, and yes they run fast enough to keep up with a paint horse.

Slaughterfish...talk about that moviestar quality, so many shiny shiny teeth. Heebie jeebies, every time.

I think I need to turn of the music too... ... or start reading some nice and non-violent fairytale. Like Little Red Riding Hood, Goldylocks and whats that one with the poisoned apple... ;)

Ugh...Trolls. I was exploring some ruins south of Leyawinn, and I was sneaking around on a balcony, some twenty feet above the ground, and ready to one shot a minotaur standing below me. I poisoned an arrow with my Freezerburn, took aim....*Damage**Damage* I turn around and see two of the buggers behind me, with no other way up. The things are sneaky, but how they got up to a balcony with no visible entrance was beyond me. I looked around after a bloody battle that the 'taur didn't notice, and I see a stone door to the inner chambers... Perfect, they're smart enough to work doors too.

But only just barely, I think. ;)

The Troll talk has reminded me of that fun little quest in the painting. You get one potion of "poison" per troll, and after that it's up to you... which usually means a lot of furious backpedaling as you try to keep out of reach while dealing the finishing blows, spells, etc to something that's as fast as you (maybe faster) at a dead run. Then it's deep breath, heal up, and on to the next one...

Playing without the music, without the audio cue of approaching danger, really does change the way you travel cross-country. Unless you're cheesing out with Detect Life, any hostiles can make use of cover. You've always had the ability to sneak up on an NPC— well, they have the same ability in these circumstances, too.

Traveling the road in the middle of a thunderstorm is the worst, since it's hard to hear approaching footsteps and the like above the din of the falling rain and the crash of thunder. Getting caught out in the countryside in the middle of a storm makes me nervous in this game.

This isnt so much scary as it is unnerving, but the way you can be talking to an NPC, and every couple of seconds their eyes shift to somewhere behind you. Mabey im just paranoid, but it gives me the impression that they are try to distract me while someone else sneaks up behind me.

Embarrasingly, I used to be somewhat scared of going into dungeons and caves. I think it was because back when I was a level 0 Prisoner, going through the tutorial dungeon, I didn't know how to sheathe weapons and pull out a torch. And because I was running around in almost total darkness, hearing a zombie squelching around and running towards me groaning seemed a hell of a lot scarier.

Then I realized dungeons contained loot and that was the end of that fear. Then I began to harbor my hatred for zombies, imps and trolls, annoying buggers that they are...
