are popup ads necessary ?

I have been getting an increasing number of popup ads on TES Source for the past few weeks.

One of the main reasons I kept coming back (and even paid for a membership) was that

ads on the site were not getting in the way.

Now, between that and the 'middle button' glitch under firefox 2 (opens tabs and acts like a

right click' at the same time), I am seriously considering alternative sites (and not renewing my membership).

Are these ads going to stay or is it something temporary ?

I don't mind ads so much - and I understand why they are necessary - it is just the popup kind that are particularly annoying.

there is just no excuse to allow them over inline ads.

We have two options, have EVERY member pay for membership, or have ads. Websites aren't free.

Pop-ups aren't my concern as I have a pop-up blocker, but what really annoys me are the adds that appear right in the middle of everything. The one that appears in the Editor's Words and in the middle of a mod description. Those need to go.

If you are still a paid Supporter then you should not be seeing them. I shall investigate.

Ok, can confirm the pop-unders don't show for me when logged in as a Supporter. Are the other ads showing for you as well (banners on the site) or are you just simply getting pop-unders?

If you are seeing other ads too then more than likely you're not logged into your account while browsing the site!

I am a supporter and I haven't seen any ads on the site. I don't know if anyone here has seen this thread on the TES forum. It gives a few people's views on what is happening and a couple of positive suggestions.

  • 4 weeks later...

I am not supported and I understand why popups are needed. However....

This morning when I was browsing new files in TES source, there was fullscreen popup ad from www.rude.com. I must say that ad was "entertaining" for guy like me (30+ year old - no girlfriend), but it might not be entertaining for everyone. You might want to check who are advertasing in your webpages.

... or at least ask them to post bigger pictures, I didn't get all details. o_O

I just had a redirect notice pop up while checking in on my files, I didn't allow it because I don't feel like screwing up my computer, but there are still redirect scripts being used somewhere. I'm not a supporter, but I was logged in at the time. You'll probably run into it faster without being logged in.

Redirects are still there, only the scripts don't get blocked any more. Sends me to an e-bay page. Should really see about finding an advert company that doesn't use malicious coding.
