PS1 Games

With the festive season approaching, and the spectre of x-mas present buying hovering threatingly around the edge of my conscience, I need some recommendations for good PS1 games which are still available to buy. :help:

And please - no remarks such as 'PS1 sucks, get a PS2' or 'consoles are teh suck, get a PC'. For reasons of family harmony, they have to be PS1 games.

Preferred genre would probably be action/adventure and fps (Alien v Predator was requested from Santa, but the elves told me that it wasn't available for PS1 and not very good anyway ), but if you know of any good games in other genres, please post them. If you could give a brief description of the game too, that would be great.

Tis the season to be jolly...and to brave the shopping malls :

Well the Final Fantasy series probably not a bad start, although may not be able to get some of the later versions (may be PS2 only)

The crash bandicoot games are quite fun and fairly kid freindly (3d type beat up the baddies move on to the next level type)

Tekken, Tekken 2 et al quite fun (as is Soul Caliber) all beat em ups (maybe more popular with the kiddies). Played that with my then faltm ate a few years ago and we used to get a bad case of "Tekken Thumb" (thumb goes sore from bashing away at the controller)

Gran Tourismo good if you like racing games and I am pretty sure doom/quake are around for PS1.

Most of those should be avaible, but you may have to check out the 2nd hand/part ex places to get some stuff

The only other thing worth noting is that PS1 game are playable on PS2 (but not the other way round).

Hmm, well Destruction Derby 2 is great fun (you get to crash cars all over the place, bits fly off etc :D)

Wild 9 is quite a good action platformer. You can use enemies to clog up grinder traps, sending bits and green goo splurting everywhere (don't worry it's not really that realistic :P)

FF7 isn't bad. Though maybe a bit difficult for a kiddie ^_^ FF8 I haven't really tried yet, but it's 15+ (so probably not suitable for kiddies either :P)

FF9 is a good one, and the first one I played. Much more for kiddies than the other FFs. Has funny bits, pretty cool combat moves and such, fairly good storyline, decent soundtrack, and it's not very difficult at all. I'd recommend that one for him above all the others :P

All of those should be available either second hand/in the platinum range.

Hmmmm.... let's see. ^_^

Others has mentioned the final fantasy series, and those are good ones. Especially ff7.

Colin Mcrae Rally 2 and Gran Turismo is quite good if you like car racing.

The Tekken series are fun if you like unrealistic tournament fighting games.

Metal gear solid - sneaky game

Probably alot more games i could mention, but i can't remember any others at the moment. Still has my good old ps1 console but have moved over to ps2 and pc games :whistling:

Thank you - you've given me a few ideas to check out :)

I had a look on amazon....most of the PS1 games they offer seem to be of the 'Dance UK' variety...

I couldn't find quite a few of the ones in your lists .... annoying how games have such a short lifespan in the shops .... <_<

But I found Metal Gear Solid, and Destruction Derby listed, and shall consult the intended recipient whether they sound ok.

Does anyone have any opinion on Medievil and Legacy of Kain? They sounded interesting...

Final Fantasy - we already have several of those :D

Medal of Honour is already one of the favourite games.... infact, I'm the only one in the family who doesn't play it (though I have been known to offer strategic advice).

Tekken might be another to look into....there used to be one in the house, but it no longer works.... Will look out for Quake and Red Alert too.

You can probably tell from the above list that I'm not too worried about age ratings or violence in games :D - though one game I would refuse to buy is GTA. IMO it's just pernicious and nasty. Seen some older kids play it at a friends house and was not impressed with it at all.

And btw - does anyone know when Soul Reaver 3 for the PS2 (yes, we have one of those too) is due to be released?

Well, I remember Syphon Filter 2 being a great game, mixture of sneak parts and tactical firefights ... a bit bloody though :/

Spyro the Dragon is a funny jump'n'run game ... although *very* ... well ... "colourful"

A good adventure is Broken Sword (2), you might know it from PC.

FPS ... Alien Resurrection had quite nice graphics, but was damn hard and the controls were, well, I couldn't deal with them :P

If you mean Soul Reaver, that's a friggin' awesome game. Cool characters, intelligent story, fun to play. B) (btw, waiting eagerly for Soul Reaver 3 myself ... wanna know how the story continues! :D )

Medievil ... I played a demo some time, was quite funny, but I don't remember too well.

And if you don't care about age recommendations, Silent Hill is extremely cool as well ... but damn frightening

Ooo Medievil! Thanks for reminding me of that. Damn fun game, lots of zombie smushing :D don't get the second one, it's godawful compared to the original.

The first one (and IMO the best) you play a resurrected warrior (a big failure of a warrior, actually) who goes out to beat the evil person he died trying to fight. There's stuff to collect, lots of different areas, all centered around the whole undead theme. All sorts of weapons and stuff of the medieval style you can use, stuff to collect, etc etc. Good game. Oh and it's a platformer, go here, get this, proceed to the next level style one (but it has a world map so you can go back and do your favourite levels all over again if you want. No pressure to keep advancing.) Plus, it's quite funny (the guy you play lost his jaw bone while erm "resting" so all he can do is grumble replies :P).

All in all, a pretty sweet game :D an old fave.

If some of you are nintendo fans, SNES had a game called "Chrono Trigger", GREAT RPG...well the sequel came out for PS1, yes you heard it right! "Chrono Cross", GREATER RPG :P....its amazing, so i highly recommend that. Also for SNES there was a game called "Secret of Mana" and for PS1 came the sequel, "Legend of Mana"...

I also recommend FF7-FF9, great games, perhaps if you can get one of the special Final Fantasy discs with a few of the other games on as well.
