Someone edited my texture and uploaded as their own mod.

OK that makes sense. I do regret placing this in an open forum, as i can see now it was probably not the best way to solve this. Thankyou all for your input. I've contacted a moderator so that this can be solved in a friendly way. I really don't want to discourage the modder from modding. This community is about sharing after all.

Well done. Make sure for the future that (if they are not already) your permissions are clear for your mod and if there is a dispute either resolve it nicely behind the scenes or if it can not be/you don't feel comfortable doing so hit that report button. As a former moderator here I can tell you I would have rather tried to resolve something nicely than ban someone any day.

Good luck.

I'm glad you're speaking to a moderator about it. These types of things shouldn't ever be let go. Good people being nice, is how a ton of things end up rampant and unchecked. Theft is theft, intentional or not. They need to at least get permission ahead of time and give credit for the base texture being yours.

I don't really want to start a riot or anything here, and firstly want to thank you for being civil about the whole issue, rather then demanding takedowns etc.

But too many modders have double standards when it comes to game modding, yes, this other mod took your work without permission and without crediting you, which is bad, I agree, he should have credited you for your base textures.

However, there is two points I would like to make.

1. You took Bethesdas work, modified it, and did not credit Bethesda

2. You did not specify any permissions for your work.

For the first point, and I can't confirm myself, but even if you started with clean files, using the base as merely a template(ie, none of the original texture is included, which I assume is the case), you are still using their textures as a base, and your texture is still being applied to their mesh, so realistically, Bethesda should be credited, just as a mod of a mod should give proper credit.

That second point though does not excuse taking your work, it is just something that would clarify for people who for some reason don't know any better.

In a perfect world, not clarifying permissions is the same as saying "You do not have permission", at which point permission must be asked for by anyone seeking to modify your work, but I still think it helps to explicitly state what others can and can not do with your mod.

In any case, taking a look at your mod you did some great texture work, and while I won't be using it myself(I typically don't use any companions), I would like to say keep up the good work.

bethesda has made it clear we are allowed to edit their assets without crediting them.

2. You did not specify any permissions for your work.

copyright laws say he doesnt have to, he made it he owns it and unless you ask you cant use it.

Atomizer was using #1 as an example showing that the situation is basically the same from modder-modder to bethesda-modder.

#2 makes me think you didn't read the thread or don't understand how copyright works.

i am aware of that, it doesnt take a super genius to figure it out. i am simply saying you dont have to credit Bethesda but unless otherwise stated should always credit the modder whose mod you used to make your own.

i did read the thread and i know how copyright works very well. i know what i am talking about, i question whether or not you do.
