peteed1985
Go into a room and they just stand in the door to the small room blocking you from getting out. I seem to recall in the older games an option that made them stay a certain distance away with 3 options? Right now they are so close i've had to forgo using any companion especially dogmeat who seems to who in particular seems to be trying to get right up in that butt for a good old sniff. I would love an option to make dogmeat keep a bit more distance as well as not fight if I ask it not to. I want to play a sniper not have a companion run out the moment I shoot one enemy with a silencer on. Mind you idk if they do run in like that because I ditched dogmeat quick smart ages before I found a suppressed weapon.
Valykry
I'm playing the sniper role myself, and since I got a silenced rifle, Curie seems to hang back with me while I pick off enemies, at least until we get spotted. UNFORTUNATELY, it seems her stealth isn't quite as good as mine, and is the reason we get spotted a lot of the time. I just wish companions were a little bit more accurate with long range rifles and had better sneak (But that may just be her).
RelicDuDe
The only way to play an effective and deadly sniper, is to go at it alone.. with my .50 calibre sniper rifle.. and my silenced 10mm for close quarter combat... i am king of the Commonwealth. All companions do, is get in the way.

Vagrant0
Because in their effort to modernize and improve upon the dialogue system they forgot to look back at FO:NV and realize that the companion wheel there had alot of things which were rather important for having companions that were not constantly giving you problems. pootthedestroyer
This has been a problem across multiple video game genres for decades, and it's more than a little frustrating that Bethesda didn't bone up on their history better. I mean, look at hunter pets in World of Warcraft. Eventually, the developers had to swallow their pride and concede that they were too retarded to function according to anything remotely close to the rules imposed upon the player's toon, and so they finally made them useful and less-frustrating (still some pathing issues, especially in dungeons) by explicitly exempting them from most game rules and just letting them do their own thing. In a game like TES/Fallout 4, unfortunately that would mean exempting the companions fully and consistently from stealth rules, collision rules, ammo usage rules, friendly fire rules, and pretty much everything else. Right now it's a weird piecemeal system. They don't actually die when they die, they never have to worry about radiation, and they occasionally teleport because they can't path for s#*!. But then they're also a giant HAY GUYS LOOK OVER HERE beacon of idiocy when you're trying to sneak around, and that means you lose out on your sneak attack bonuses even though the enemies still have no idea you exist. Something's gotta give. Somebody has to swallow their pride and admit that a good game experience is worth a companion who's a WoW hunter pet against all in-universe reason. Warmaker01
I understand why they did the Companion teleport thing. But I'll be honest. It has startled me at times to turn around and see someone right in front of me when there wasn't any before :ninja: Edit: As for companion usefulness at extended range, I think I'll try giving them Plasma weapons with Long Range / Recon Long Range Scopes. There are a variety of Plasma configurations that grant stupidly high accuracy, twice that of other weapons, even Lasers. The catch is that they'll eat Plasma Energy Cells which is a precious commodity if you're not cheating. starlitegirl
Dog is really the only good companion. Probably because I like dogs and don't ecpect much from him because he's a dog. He's great at finding the hard to find foes. That last one you hear but can't see. Go get 'em, dogmeat. I'll shoot if you fetch.
