MrDoctorDD
No. I think pirates hurt the market, but to be honest the market sucks. The companies are to blame, especially PC side increasing the price due to greed. I'm sure I am not alone when I wait for these $59 game to go on sale for half the price or more. A lot of the games to come out in the last 2-3 years have come out half-arsed. (bug-ridden or half-finished). I buy all my games, though I question if I should as half of the products I have purchased didn't deserve my money. I really have no opinion towards pirates, I just think I am dumb for buying these games.
HeyYou
Oh look, another piracy thread.I know it's about prosecution, not piracy in general, but it's already swayed off topic so here we go. Piracy as a whole will never die. The scene will always be releasing cracks and there will always be idiots on the TPB downloading games and hurting developers. You can justify it however you like. Too expensive/Intrusive DRM/No available demo/I wasn't going to buy it so it's not a lost sale/ etc. At the end of the day pirates gonna pirate. The only argument that holds much water is feasibility. On a private site like WhatCD you can download from a selection of music larger than itunes, with maxed out speeds in any format imaginable with that good feeling in your heart that you're hurting the RIAA and record labels. DING DING DING!!!! You are CORRECT SIR! (sir?? no offense intended if you are not male.....) Piracy is always going to be there, and no amount of DRM is ever going to make a dent. In fact, the more intrusive/draconian the DRM is, the higher the likelihood that the game will be pirated. DRM only affects HONEST gamers.
jhnsnjck884
Remember Ubisoft's recent super-draconian DRM for Assassin's Creed 2? Yeah, cracked before it was released. No it wasn't. It took months before it was officially cracked. Skidrow just used the files from the hackers that made the offline server. The offline server was rather poorly made anyways. There are still a lot of requests for it too. Tbh the decision to even use such DRM was rather horrible. Plus I highly doubt any police official or whatever you wanna call it is gonna arrest someone just because they downloaded a album. Well, nowadays it is difficult to crack new games, such as Call Of Duty Black Ops, or Battlefield Bad Company 2, and even cracking them, it is impossible to play the full game, since Multiplayer and other functions are protected by a unique serial key. Steam games are cracked very quickly. Mostly within 3-4 hours of release. Same with SecuROM and GFWL. Cracking a game does not necessarily mean that you can't play the full game. I can already think of a lot of examples like that, Magicka being one of them. As for MP, yes using a crack does render the MP portion unplayable on official servers in some games but not in Bioshock 2 (I think) and Borderlands where as you can have a cracked copy and still play online. Crysis 2 when it first came out you could play on official servers with a randomly generated key and a crack.
