Essential mods?

Oh, right, then shadowed power armour. Definitely that. What? Am I the only one who finds proper sneaky ninja armour absolutely essential if I'm to role-play someone, shall we say, initiated in the ancient art of the shadow warriors?

Well, now seriously, depending on how you define essential, either nothing is essential (you CAN play and finish the game with no mods) or everything is for someone. Maybe not for you, but some people out there. Just saying.

Sorry, but despite what you imply, the True Storms weather mod is essential to a 'vanilla' playthru in my opinion. Beth includes 'weather' but it is lame and incompetent (who would have thought). There is good reason this mod rates so highly- and it brings back to the game something that should have been there in the first place.

My absolute fav moments in the game have been when experiencing action in the midst of a stunning storm.

That's up to debate. Since there is no fog or dense rain in the vanilla game you're adding something that completely changes the experience. It is not essential at all. I would suggest it for a second play-through to create a different experience.

That list suggests that unlimited ammo for companions in necessary. Utter nonsense. There's so much ammo in this game that if I were to empty my current inventory I could shoot for over 30 minutes straight. There's also a perk that allows you to find more ammo and that, together with the find more caps perk, is the most useless perk in the game.

My list:

Ammocraft - especially useful early on.

Button Lowered Weapons - easier to see in front of you.

Companion Infinite Ammo - just because it's a pain micromanaging the nitwits (they appear to have washed out of Stormtrooper Marksmanship School).

Craftable Cooking Oil - need lots of oil for mods and stuff.

Depth of Field (DoF) Removal - 'cuz DoF sucks.

Full Dialogue Interface - it's awfully nice to actually know what you're gonna say.

Favorites Menu Quick Item Switch - faster and easier to switch items in the heat of battle.

No Wild Fruits - wild fruit is only good for eating raw, useless for making anything.

Screen Flicker Killer - makes terminals and the Pip-Boy much easier to live with.

Shaikujin's Better warning for settlements being attacked - too easy to miss attack notifications.

...and lastly, and I hope I'm not too self-serving with this one...

Minutemen Quest Relief - the radiant Minutemen quests will drive you mad if left unchecked.
