Naming Conventions

This is to all Modders.

 

I do not know who taught you how to name mods as I have download a number that have names that do not help in knowing which mods are being loaded. For example - 1.7 Basic-3463-1-7, what does this mod archieve do? (I do not need to know)

 

In addition to write descriptions into the ESP or ESM and if you are using AWKCR, for example, put the long hand name in Brackets or something. It does help when setting up a playthrough.

Please learn how to rename things on your own. It's been a windows feature for quite a while now.

If you want to convey a message, please also learn how to do it respectfully.

While it is nice to have everything given appropriate and descriptive names, demanding that people do so while also insulting them sure as hell isn't the way to bring about any kind of change in the community. That's the kind of attitude that drives modders away. That's the kind of attitude that was partially responsible for me leaving the modding community several years ago. Enough people like you start making demands and treat us like crap in the process when we're going through the effort of packing it up to release for you (because it sure as hell ain't for ourselves) and we decide to hell with it and keep our goodies for our own use or only let friends have the things we make.

 

You might think that asking for more appropriate/descriptive naming isn't that big of a deal--maybe even that it should be common sense to do so--but you don't realize how many other people make "recommendations" to modders for every little tiny thing about their mod someone else might not like, and many of those are rudely stated at that (like yours is). Enough of that kind of crap, and the effort of preparing things for release seems futile. Why waste this time and energy typing ReadMes, creating fomods, going through all our assets to double-check everything, packaging it all up and going about getting nice screenshots; why go through all this production for releasing a mod when it's just going to result in rude negativity from the people you did all that for?

 

I'm not saying we dislike constructive criticism (and even that example you gave is fine to point out politely), but there's a pretty big chasm between that and "I demand you do this thing that you didn't do because you're an idiot."

 

I was thinking of starting a thread about the mods that didn't get released, so people can mention all those little things they made for their own (or a friend's) use, but decided weren't worth the effort of releasing. Maybe I should.

Mod archives are simply standard zip files. If you're ever uncertain what one is, you can open it and have a look at its contents.

 

Also if you're not aware what all your mods are and what they do, then you should be extremely careful as you don't have enough information to avoid problems and mod conflicts. Organized maintenance of your libraries of downloaded mods, being familiar with their compatibility issues, tracking new releases and overall paying attention is essential to successfully running multiple mods.

 

If you find evocative names the most suitable mnemonic assistance for yourself, then simply rename the mod as you place it into your collection. You can rename a mod archive quite safely without any impact on its effectiveness as the archive name is not read by Fallout 4.

It would be far more effective to politely comment on the mod page in question that the filename of the archive is ambiguous, rather than to post a rude passive-aggressive rant in the forums to nobody in particular. Or you could make your own "perfect" mod to show the world how it is done. Oh, I see you have zero mods of your own... ;P
