The Thread of Computers (aka will my computer run Skyrim)

I'm just hoping it will be well optimized for PC.

I care for a fluid experience and I would gladly sacrifice a bit of graphical quality to get steady FPS and no stuttering, but I can only do that if it will be optimized well.

Something I wouldn't call well optimized is Deus Ex Human Revolution. I'm still getting stuttering and sometimes a bit lower FPS with only Edge AA, 4 AF and SSAO on normal.

I'm not calling it a badly optimized game, but it could have been better.

Now I'm hoping Skyrim will be better than this.

HA!! you too?? .. thats what is making me so worried .. my PC has always knocked console games out of the park and then I loaded up deus ex and I stutter loading objects when I swing my character around and the LOD pops in .. hearing your having problems makes me feel better though :3 I have faith in bethesda buffing skyrim up for PC users .. I mean .. they clearly have the time seeing as they have been in debugging mode for at least a month now and have a little more than two months to go.

Makes me feel better too. I always think there's something wrong with my PC when a game does not run like I imagine it.

I think I'm worrying too much though. I have faith that Bethesda will create the best possible experience for us. And then our modders will improve that even further.

First mod I will use will be Skyrim stutter remover

Every other requirement my computer meets except the 3g Ram. Grrrrs. Windows XP won't recognize the 4 GB of Ram I have installed. And right now reads that I only have 2.5 GB installed. I only need .5 more GB and I could run it. But I can't.. which means I have to get Windows 7 or change to Windows XP 64-bit. Both require me to reinstall a bunch of crap I don't feel like having to reinstall. I have a LOT of games and downloads on this computer right now and keying in all those license keys for each of the games I have makes my head hurt, never mind the countless other things I'm going to have to try to figure out...like what is and what isn't compatible with Windows 7..which is the way I'll probably go instead of switching to 64 bit.

Is there anyway to convince my computer just to read another .5 more gb of ram? Anyway I can coax it besides upgrading to Windows 7 or 64 bit?

PS, I haven't read the rest of the posts on this thread so if someone else has already gone into this issue, I apologize.

Skyrim does not require to have 3GB of Ram, but it would be good to have them.

Download Game Booster, a program which disables all unneeded programs that are running, and frees up RAM in the process.

You can also try this: http://dwf.blogs.com...dows-vista.html

It should trick your OS in using more RAM.

Thank you and Lowk, I just did it and I now have 3 gbs of ram...although only 2.95 is actually available, I think, if I read it right.

Anyway, great! Now I don't have to upgrade anything, YAY! Thank you soooo much!

K, I just tried to Kudo the both of you but I got a "page not found" error message both times. :( So, I'll try again later...until then, two big fat kudos!!!

Yay, delicious Kudos:

KUDOS!

And yeah, the system has been down for a while. I'm keeping tabs on all the people I mean to give kudos as soon as it's back up!

There is a website that checks to see if you can run Skyrim with your rig. About half way down the page it says "can I run", fill in your system specs to see if you can.

Hey all! I'm buying a new laptop for college, and I was wondering if it will be ablle to run Skyrim, and if so, what settings do you estimate it will run at? (I know it'si mpossible to give exact settings since it isn't out yet, but an estimate is more than enough for me:) ) The laptop in question is http://www.onyougo.com/asus-g53sw-sx105v-g53sw-sx105v-notebookslaptops-features_pi361785e2 .

Any feedback is apreciated!

My computer:

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz Overclocked to 3.25Ghz

Ram - 4Gigs

Video Card -Nvida EVGA 470 GTX

I KNOW that my system can run this game well. What I have is a slightly different question: How much benefit would I see from upgrading that processor to an i5? The proc is the next piece of hardware I want to upgrade, but it's going to cost me a lot to do it. If it will make a big difference in Skyimr's performance (plus extended load from mods), then it's worth it to me.Otherwise, I can wait a little longer.

I understand that Skyrim is likely going to be very processor-intensive, so I thought I would ask opinions on this subject.

I'd say a kinda medium performance increase. But you may not really get much of a benefit unless you are counting the fps or something.

Oblvion and Fallout3 are quite cpu heavy. Especially Ob considering that it cannot even use more than one core, so a high single core clock speed always beat a lower multi core in Obs case. F3 could use multi core making it less cpu bottlenecked.

This time I would expect it to use quads if you had it. But at 3.25Ghz on a duo I doubt that will struggle. The cpu is responsible for physics, AI, sound, and any scripting and some graphic processes. General process calculations. But at a certain point fps increase drop off on clock speed and core increase. Unless it is using sever client mmo/ online shooters then a cpu of that sort would probably be enough that handle all those processes in Skyrim, once you get above a certain threshold, which your cpu might just about be getting towards, then the gains drop off quite a bit. It is probably your bottleneck if there is one on your system, as the 470 will munch Skyrim no probs in the graphic department.

Personally I would wait until it is out and play it, and if there is any sort of turning a setting down, then think about upgrading. perhaps save yourself some dough by waiting
