The thing is, assuming it was an option, those that find it offensive can simple toggle it off. As for children playing, as has been pointed out already, that's up to their parents. If they let a child play an MA 15+ game (which is how Skyrim is rated here in Australia) then you're going to have to expect 'mature' content in it.

I like a degree of adult content in my games. And I think in many cases - thanks to ridiculous uproars from a lot of people - it's sorely underdeveloped. (Praise the Nine for my GTA hookers! )

And seriously speaking, I'm not asking for tons of porn. I just think it's a shame that there's such a gap between boringly child-friendly content and ultra explicit content. There's a middle-ground which is sadly lacking in many RPGs. (If I choose to marry one of those ugly NPCs in Skyim I at least want to enjoy a few 'marital benefits' :whistling: )

Incidentally, why on earth did they bother putting children in Skyrim? You can't kill the annoying little snot-noses (mods notwithstanding) and everyone is so infernally paedophile-paranoid and morally obsessed these days it's more of a headache than it's worth.

I could have done without the cheesy accents, anyhow... Play tag with you, you interminable little humbug? Bah! Off with your head!

Wait, this is STILL going on?

Seriously, in the sexually repressed western culture we live in (Which, admitedly, isn't the worst, though it's still pretty bad) asking for nudity as standard for a high profile, mainstream game is absurd. The RPer in my wouldn't mind it for realism's sake, but the rational person in me understands its not worth the headache.

Society needs to mature a lot before we get anything like this. For starters, any overly religious, sexually repressed bible (Or Torah or Koran) thumbers should be burned on their crosses (Or other religious symbols), and absolutely moronic laws agaisnt polygyny should be thrown out the window.

Untill you stop seeing governments trying to ban homosexualiy, polygyny or even simple sexuality, it's not worth the effort to put nudity in a game, simply because of its social association with sexuality. The only reason to do so is to stir the pot, and those that do so are generally only carried by a loyal following, which limits the propensity for future games. Anyone who is seriously asking for it in a modern social climate drastically missunderstands the social, political and economic effects of including Nudity in a game.

Only way to overcome that sort of repression is to push for changes ^. Even if it's a piddly matter like nudity in an RPG.

I loathe censorship, prudish sexual repression and the like.

Therefore - even if it's only for my RPG - I won't accept 'it won't happen' as a reason not to keep asking for it.

As laudable as that is, for social reform of this nature low-key and fringe elements won't get you anywhere. They were pushing civil equality in fringe communities, particularly Fantasy and Science Fiction, for decades, if not most of a century, before it caught on in the main stream culture. RPGs, even for a blockbuster game like Skyrim, are still to sideline to promote major change, meaning they alone cannot rid themselves of the social stigma inclusive nudity would entail.

It would be great if they could, but one needs to think bigger... much bigger.

Not necessarily ^ Often books, music, film and art are the only forms of free expression available when you can't have it in larger ways. I don't think it's unreasonable to see games including content that goes against prudish conventions. In fantasy at least anything is possible. If anything, you're more likely to see liberal elements in 'fiction' (so to speak) sooner than you will in laws and society at large.

I agree with Brittainy. Every change needs a beginning. It simply isn't easy being the first to do something. Before Mortal Kombat came about, blood and death in consoles pretty much didn't happen. After a silly dance involving game genies, green blood, flop sweat and other nonsense, the prudes crying about violence were finally ignored and gaming moved on. That was almost two decades ago though and the need for gaming to grow up again is past due.

It is a bit of a shame that Skyrim didn't try to push things but it isn't surprising. It isn't easy being the trailblazer for change and failure is a definite possibility.

Ignoring the brewing debate about fiction influencing society...

I'm apathetic to its presence but I'd say leave it to the modders. Otherwise Faux News would be on about it for ages, not to mention 1st class idiots that follow in Jack Thompsons footsteps.

^ That just brought back some memories. I remember all the hype surrounding MK.

Damn, you just made me feel old
