Ways to Roleplay the Sole Survivor

There are possible break points in the storyline:

After Codsworth at Sanctuary

He could be less sure about where you could go to find things, after all he's been staying at home this entire time. Possibly remove the concord dialouge section? Insert another quest node to find help?

After Concord

They could ask you to assist them in getting to sanctuary, and afterwards instead of saying "go to diamond city" mention a number of settlements, such as diamond city, goodneighboor, abernathy, and a couple of others over the map for you to check out.

After arriving at Diamond City

You could require the check with the mayor in order to know that you need to go see Nick, Piper could alternatively recommend you go check with the Bar, and around town, giving you a number of quests to do.

After killing Kellogg

Simply remove the drops from Kellogg that literally everyone loots anyways without the dialouge first, insert a hidden object quest where something has carried it off when you go back to get it, thus leaving you open to explore and look for it a bit.

After the Memory Den

Biggest one; just mention the folder, do not mention the Doctor. So the PC has to find the folder, which could open up a bit more exploration in the quest line.

I've not gone further myself yet but sure there are other points that could have been made into breaks.

I role play as an ss stuck in a groundhog day of my creator constantly breaking the game, re-installing, changing mods, making me a girl one day and guy the next, checking out Piper's backside in commonwealth mini-shorts one day and lord knows what the next day. In between I build settlements, hoping groundhog day stays away one more save.

This is the tale of Jet Black!

Mr. Black took pictures during the war, the strong brutalization mixed with peaceful scenery granted him a mediocre amount of fame. (I take a lot of pics)

After they kill Nora, they also pop Mr. Black. Years pass, Shaun wanting the family he never knew creates the most advanced synth yet, one with no "Off" function and with all the knowledge and memorys of OG. Black. Shaun then put Synth Black back in the vault, thinking that it would be the perfect performance test, Shaun is looking for a replacement that can spread the institutes influence out with force.

Mr. Black not at all ready for this world got captured by a raider, after failing to realize the danger Mr. Black was facing. They totured Mr. Black for days, till a super mutant hunting party opened up an opportunity for Mr. Black to limp away.

Mr. Black makes it to the drumlin diner, as a man named Wolfgang approached. Jet draw his pipe revolver and shot Wolfgang in his stupid face .Hrhm. Trudy was grateful and Jet spend the night there waiting for the rad storm to pass.

The next morning as Jet was about to leave, scavengers attacked Trudy's , Jet did not want to help her and left going east.

Jet travelled by foot for days, sleeping in abandoned places as he could but Jet was never safe. At times when Jet slept he could recall memories that seamed familiar yet not his own, like holding baby Shaun.

Jet was picking up some scrap when he heard the terrifying howl of a Deathclaw. Jet saw a settlement ahead, The Slog, and ran as fast as he could to escape the horror. Jet ran past a disfigured silhouet and hid in the house. The slaughter went on for hours , this was the first time Jet did jet.

Next time on Jet Black

A new home but also a mechanical menace approaches, will Jet ever learn the truth? Is this even Jet? Find out next time!

In my RR run, I have setup a sniper tower to defend and would help around abrathy farm. harvest, fix the house and the wire fence etc in exchange they let me store my stuff and share some of the food. One time my hunting rifle ammo ran out and I thought it was high time to start to explore the map.

Another one was of a buddy of mine, his dude have always wanted to be an architect but his parents forced him to join the army instead, now the dude aromas the wastes, rebuilding houses for people.

This just makes me think of how much better it would have been had the PC been in the press corps in the war rather than fighting.

You don't have to fight when you in the army.

You could have been a sniper, a robot export (assaultron where used by the army.) Radio guy, a cook, a doc, maybe you fixed the PA, the jets and there are other countless jobs.

Another story I have heard is that there was a soldier, I don't recall what war, but he was not a hero at all, another soldier get shot after he killed countless foes and the dude took the glory form him, I think another one was about one who stole the ID of a soldier. To get cash and fame.

Another issue with the pacing of the MQ is that things are always "Rush! Rush!" to the next part. Get to the Institute, and you don't even get a chance to sleep in the room you're assigned before a courser is nagging you to go talk to the boss about the next assignment.

It is possible to take a breather when you're supposed to make contact with the Railroad. After all, with their special, secret code which even the geniuses at the Institute can't use to track 'em down, it only makes sense that the SS might not immediately find them. Then some time off the MQ can be justified, at least until you, the player, decide it's time to carry on.

But then, Bethesda isn't writing great fiction here. It's a story on rails. ='[.]'=

I didn't like that either. After I was done with the main quest, I had barely seen any of the areas on the map, and I only had maybe half a dozen side quests queued up to do at that point. The older games did a much better job of presenting side quests and areas; as I've seen others mention, it was much more common to find a note or NPC or something that would lead you into a much larger storyline, whereas in FO4 most seem to just present lore.

Even a 'we're at a dead end, go do other stuff for awhile' type of thing, a la Caius in Morrowind, would have been welcome in my opinion.
