Fahrenheit85
I think I'm about to go fight Ursula or whatever that thing is in Foltsams harbor. Did most of the side quest but haven't messed to much around with potions or bombs. Right now I always have Rook and Swallow going with a whetstone going on each sword. Getting by pretty good for the most part. What other potions should I be buying up? Only bomb I use is Grapeshot, Should I look into others? Also for my signs, I only use Quen sign for same shield, Should I even mess with the others? I'm running low on whetstones, how do i get more? One last questions, anything I need to buy in Foltsam before I leave? Like missables?
BarefootWarrior
You are going to fight the Kayran. Everyone is different and plays different. For the Kayran, you will need the Mongoose potion, it is part of the side quests. I did not bother with the Kayran trap, you are too busy during the fight to even set the thing (my opinion). For myself, I used mostly the Grapeshot bombs, Dragons Dream and Dancing Star through out the game. I did not use any bombs during the Kayran fight. You will be too busy to keep using Quen, as you will see (and as much as I would have liked too)..you will hear Sile yelling to use the Yrden. As for the whetstones, I'd use those sparingly as I did not see a way to get more as the game progresses, but I could be wrong on that. For the potions, you will be collecting ingredients as you go through the game and find / buy the formulas as you go. You can make your own potions through 'meditation' if you have all the components. The Kayran fight is a good one and may take many times to get through it, good luck and have fun.
LenSquig
There is no right or wrong way to play. For the Kayran fight, I used Swallow, Tawny Owl and Mongoose potions and (I think) you will need 1 grapeshot bomb. No need for any oils or whetstones on your sword. There is no need to buy many recipes in chapter 1, just a few basic ones is fine. You can buy more later. There are merchants that sells recipes in every almost every town in every chapter (sometimes you can find recipes as loot, but thats rare). As you continue playing, you will figure out if you need more potions, oils, bombs, traps or not. Remember, most potions have both positive and negative effects when you use them. Witcher Wiki is your friend... be sure to read what the potion actually does before buying it (and if there is a better one suited for your build) http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/The_Witcher_2_potions. Its also a good idea to read about Oils, Traps, Bombs too before shelling out your hard earned money on the recipe (spoken like a true witcher ... LoL!) If you need to beef up your weapon damage use Oils. Save your whetstones for later when you REALLY need them, you wont be able to get anymore. I mostly used Hangmans Venom for my Steel sword and a few other oils for my Silver sword. It very useful to read about the monster before you fight it. The monsters you have knowledge about from fighting or reading books are listed in your character page, click the icons on the upper right to see what monster you know (the other icon shows the "aquired" abilities you learned). The monster's description aften gives you a good idea what oils, bombs, spells to use on them. (For example Endragas can bleed to death so you may want use Brown Oil) You can also put Runes into the slots on your sword (if the sword has slots, some do not) to improve it. Runes are expensive and permanent, so consider carefully before putting them into your sword, especially swords you will replace soon. The kayran fight is dead easy period. Use the Yrden sign to trap the tentacles, cut them off and walk up that bridge. The key issue here is to keep Geralt rolling from one side to the other. There is absolutely no need to read books, use potions (apart from the mongoose one to complete a side quest), oils, bombs, the kayran trap or what so ever. Just one thing you need to take into consideration; is your QTE set to difficult or not? This makes a world of difference.
dragonbird
I think LenSquig was giving a generalised answer, as this is in the "no spoiler" section. :) Fahrenheit85 - regarding your last question, you'll still be in Flotsam after this fight. The only thing I tend to stock up on is dead endregas.
FastBlackCat
Ursula? Love the name for the Kayran! I'll think I'll continue calling it that from now on. I, for one, did not find that fight "dead easy", although others seem to find it so. LenSquig's and BarefootWarrior's posts are good advice. I personally never used many bombs unless required to, although I started having a lot of fun with them (and traps) in the last chapter, but I do use potions, my personal favorites being Swallow, Tawny Owl, Petrie's Philtre (on occasion but not often), Wolf and Rook--and Cat in really dark places because I HATE not being able to see. And yes, save the whetstones for later fights because I'm pretty sure they're all you're going to get. I've looked assiduously for them and have not been able to find them for sale anywhere. As for signs, in TW2 I found myself using Quen more than any other, although Yrden became a big factor when dealing with Ursula. In TW1, I was using Aard more than any other sign. Experiment with things and you'll discover your preferences for how to play. Have fun doing it! Edited August 4, 2011 by FastBlackCat
dragonbird
I'd also like to recommend Golden Oriole as a good defensive potion, especially in the early game when your armor isn't too wonderful. It's not as good as some as the others, but it has low toxicity and no adverse side-effects. Add me to the list of people who always find The Kayran to be a challenge. I've successully killed it at least half a dozen times, but it's the only fight in the game where I still have to drop to Easy.
