Alcrin
Meh, publishers love Steam because it means they have more control over what the consumer does with the game. It's the same reason consoles exist: It's purely a detriment to the consumer, but due to copyright it still lives anyway because your only choice is to go with whatever the publisher provides, break the law, or go completely without. hector530
People say you can't play steam game without the internet, I can They also say fallout NV doesn't install from disc, I've done it 3 times. Never had to download the whole game like people seem to say you also have to on steam.
BigBodZod
I understand folks not wanting to have to use Steam or some other online service to play their game but indeed it has come down to money and control for the game publishers. Since the majority of the purchasing population lives in high-speed inet areas of the world this is where the money is to be had, simple economics is all. So what does this mean for the folks in rural areas of the world with dial-up or sat connections ?!? Unfortunately it means you get left behind. You can sign a billion ipetitions but I really think it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of making money on the folks that live in the high-speed inet areas. Ghogiel
No point? Say if we get a million people signed, Bethesda will have to look at that and wonder how much money will be lost. Even 100,000 people will do the trick. I either fold and not play any games or I fold and play the hand that is dealt. Words I never lived by. There is the hidden choice. It is like flipping a coin. Heads or tails, heads or tails. Suppose, however, you flip it enough times. Suppose, one day, it lands on its edge. The battle has not been lost. If enough people stand with me, stand with us, we can, we will show Bethesda that Steam is a horrendous decision and it will have consequences. And I am not just talking about us not buying it.too bad that a million people won't sign it. even if they did, They'll just see the 25 + milliion people with steam accounts and say well you are still a statistical minority, we are making bank. The industry as a whole has made the leap already, and the record sales and constant growth the industry is experiencing, and the potential to make more money proves that this model is working out well. I have no idea what the hell this third choice is. I am still not a supporter of steam, I do have any steam games or an account. I am not yet one of the people who say I don't like, down with Steam, and yet actually have supported it by buying games requiring Steam and have a Steam account. However this next year is probably the last of avoiding games with this sort of online app sign in thingy, Now that all the developers have adopted this or a similar model, I have to quit PC gaming or sign up. There is no other choice. they see the social network value estimates of things like facebook, and the $$$ it represents. Gamers must sign in if they want to play their game. Matrix has begun. SomeWelshGuy
You put the disk in, steam launches and asks to install. Unless there's an issue, Steam will always try to install from disk first before resorting to downloading as a backup.

Never seen anyone else report this .. sure it wasn't a patch and a slow net connection? The board had plenty of people reporting it. I ran the installer, went to make coffee and when I returned I found the game downloading. I have a fast connection with no limits so I wasn't that bothered, Google "new vegas install from disk" and you'll find it was a common issue. pbrand
I found these instructions on the Steam support page for installing games from disks without downloading from Steam. Anybody think this will work? https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382
El`derina
mine installed via download also... pissed me the bloody hell off, just from the principal of the matter! but it wasnt really an issue,.. my game worked fine aside from deleting my saves... grr,.. well that stopped after the first patch, but i dont trust steam from the start because of it.
