What's life like in the UK?

Your experience will depend on how much money you have/earn and where you live. Outside of the scummiest areas crime is generally low and gun crime virtually non existent. Taxes are high but as a resident you would get things like free healthcare (eventually) that usually won't kill you, it's worth mentioning that visitors from non E.U countries are expected to pay for everything other than emergency treatment so make sure you're insured if you're only visiting. Prices are high, property prices are crazy in some parts and rents generally reflect the ridiculous price the owner paid for the property. Honestly I'm struggling to come up with anything positive.

Sounds interesting, I wanted to know more about how people act because god knows that everyone around me looks almost exactly the same. It's like a factory created a design for people and started shipping them out.

EDIT: I would like to note by look I meant how people dressed and acted, not their race. Thought it would be a good idea to point that out.

People dress pretty much the same here, I blame the chain stores with their lack of variety. Depending on where you are you will see some people from various cultures dressed differently, this is especially true in the cities. My experience of the U.S is somewhat limited not having spent a great deal of time there but I think we have more in common than we do differences. We tend to be less open, we're more likely to keep problems and worries to ourselves. Religion tends to be a more private thing here, start talking about and peoples eyes will slowly glaze over. We complain a lot about everything from the weather, if you ever want to find a fault with something then ask an Englishman. Our food is as bad as yours, however our ales are excellent and after a good few of them you won't care about the food.

And they wonder why the economy is suffering??Maybe thats the problem :teehee:

As stated property prices/rent is imo extortionate. The sense of humour might take a little while to get to grips with, it's an acquired taste. It's does rain a lot, and being an island there is a lot of wind. So unless you are from NW US it might be quite dreary. The people are fairly proud to be English, it comes in both good and bad flavours. It's quite secular but generally tolerant of religious practice. It's not so prudish as it was in the past.

Essential research about the British would be Monty Python and Only Fools and Horses.

We have plenty of clothing stores but everything they sell looks the same, its worse for men, the choice is terrible. :( The clothes also seem to be made to fit mutants, it's really hard to find anything that fits. I'm 6'1 with a 34" waist, hardly a freak but finding something that actually fits is a nightmare, it's no wonder so many people in this country look like they're wearing someone elses clothes.

I am still slightly unsure about it. I think I would like to give UK a shot. As odd as it sounds, I kind of like most of the stuff everyone has stated so far. I am not what one would call "average" in the sense that I will keep to myself unless directly asked about something by one of my friends or family. Anywho, again, thanks for all replies!!!

Edit: I would like to add I like odd weather. Unless, it involves a large quantity of not being to go outside without getting mud everywhere.

If you do come, don't come to the North East. No odd weather here just day after day of gray skies and rain this summer. Depressing as hell. Plus the people are ugly and smell bad. Oh wait thats just me

Jim_uk is right in that the food is generally gross and plastic and very fast foodish, as many Brits are very lazy and do not give a monkey's about quality. However, where I am we have some very good quality restaurants, but you WILL pay extortionate prices for them. On the plus side we produce some of the finest fresh food to be found, if you are inclined to cook for yourself, and the climate is conducive to grow yer own veggies for sure. And yeah...the beer. After three pints of Marston's Owd Roger you'll be horizontal anyway.

Not that I am in any way biased, but my favourite areas are Derbyshire and Devon and Cornwall.
